I have to interject a bit. What's so magical about WA lenses? Maybe I'm missing something. Tried the kit lens at the wide end, and I loved it a lot.
But the reaction of people about WA lenses is borderline irrational.
Again, I must be missing something. Kindly enlighten me.
Thanks

It's the special feeling you get from being able to take pictures of your own ears. One of the reasons is, based on a price per pound, wide angle lenses seem to be the most expensive lenses in the Canon lineup.

Canon will now be selling the USM version of the Drebel kit lens as a separate item with an estimated street price of $169. The 10-22 will be $799 (ouch) and the 17-85 IS will go for $599.

Thanks belmondo (or JP  )
So the price is the main issue, not the functionality of a WA lens.

Because the EF-S lenses have an extra 'appendage' on the back that will interferes with the mirror on non EF-S compatible cameras.

Have Fun,
big "ouch" on that 10-22. Definately too expensive to start hacking away at the mount. :)

It would be nice if canon continues to create the EF/ EF-S mounts on higher level camera bodies so these lenses arent useless once you upgrade.
$800? wow, I guess its worth it if you want that wide of an angle with your 300d or 20d. Cant wait to see some sample shots.

Strange - one of the things thrown around as a justification for the EF-S lenses was that they would be cheaper, since they are made for the smaller image circle. So the 28-135 IS has a B&H price of $410 and the EF-S equivalent 17-85 IS will sell for $599? Go figure...

Have Fun,
That 10-22 EF-s has 3 aspheric and one Super-UD element - I'm surprised that it doesn't have a red stripe on it as well. Oh well, I guess that 17 mm is plenty wide enough. :)

I think even if I still had my Drebel I would keep the Sigma 12-24 and give the 10-22 a pass at that price for a non-L lens.

Apart from faster auto focus, is the USM version of 18-55 lens likely to deliver better picture quality as compared to non USM version which was so far shipped with Digital Rebel?

Probably not. If true that the kit will come with one version and the one you can buy is different it makes me wonder why. Perhaps Canon is trying to keep the cost of the kit at a minimum. Who knows?
The USM version first showed its face when the Black Drebel (Kiss Digital) appeared in Japan. I wondered then what they were going to do with it.

If that's the actual price, I'm gonna give canon the finger and go with the 12-24
Smaller image sensor allows us to use new technologies and design chepaer and more affordable lenses... blah blah blah
This sounds like a speech from my MP  Screw canon, I'm getting myself 12-24 :?

I'd rather get the canon instead of sigma just because I need the fastest wide angle for action shots.
canon 10mm-22mm - 3.5-4.5
sigma 12mm-24mm - 4.5-5.6

What kind of action is shot at wide angle in low light? Just curious :?

Rollerblading, It's quite often when your in a area where telephoto doesn’t quite work and it doesn’t allow you to show the skating trick from a unique perspective and show what your subject is doing on the obstacle (The wide angle is a very convenient lens when your looking for a good angle with skating and don’t have time to find the best telephoto shot). A lot of times we skate at nighttime so we need powerful flashes along with a fast lens to freeze the skater and light the scene.

I see  I suspected that actually, but that's a really specific application. You may be better off with that 800 buck EF-S then. :?
I'd be shooting landscapes and maybe guests with a flash, so 12-24 is more than enough

Is this a rectilinear lens?
I bet there will be a handful of potential
MkII buyers who'll get the 20D instead
because of this lens.

I can confidently say an emphatic NO to any image improvement with the usm version.No...i don't actually know that but it's what canon allways do with kit lenses-offer a micromotor version and a 'fake' usm version of the same lens
I say 'fake' because it's just a mini usm motor connected to the same drive gears where the micromotor usually is.
So count on no full time manual focus overide and very likely no faster AF than a normal version
Cynicism  .Not really.all kit lenses follow that pattern
Wow the 10-22 *is* expensive
I too would choose the sigma 12-24 instead
***by the way-as far as i know, the new EF-s lenses should (?) be modify-able just like the kit lens.
The difference is that you would remove the mount and get a machinist to make an EF type replacement. It wouldn't cost much and avoids the problem of hacking an expensive lens
