I don't think you hurt anything. All it does is lock the mirrior up. You just can't clean it with the lens on. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :D

No harm, no foul. You could select clean with the lens on all day long and the camera will not explode. ;)

I think they tell you to remove the lens first, because it is frowned upon to remove/replace a lens with the body power on. That can create mysterious misfunctions, and lockups, which are usually cureable by cycling the camera power. In extreme cases, you might have to do a master reset, using the little hole in the bottom of the camera for that purpose.
In any event, just try to remember to not be replacing lenses with the power on. It's just a bad idea.

I missed that in the manual! Thanks for posting that!

Missed that, too!
How do you do a master reset? The crappy index to the manual doesn't have any listing. Can you supply a link or page number?

They dont tell you to remove the lens in the manual.
Step 1 is making sure you have enough battary life of have the camera hooked up to the dc coupler.
step2 select clean sensor
step3 clean the sensor (but has a diagram with a blower showing the camera body!)

You are quite correct - you can't clean the sensor with a lens on.

Come to think of it, I think you are supposed to hold a combination of buttons on the body while cycling the power. I don't have the camera or manual with me, so I can't help much at the moment. Canon has the manuals for download in PDF form on their site. They are searchable, and sometimes are more useful than trying to use the printed manual's index.

I think the only reset, other than the Setup 2 menu option, is to remove all batteries (including the button cell).
