I am wanting to get my name in our local paper, most of the shots in it are horrible, 99.9% of them look like they are taken with a disposable cam, what sthe best thing to try to sell to a Newspaper and how does one go about it?

Call the photo editor and make an appointment to meet with him. Take in a portfolio of 12-20 shots, all 8x10's and a cd with the same shots on it. Offer to leave it with him if he would like you to.
Act as you would on any other job interview, be professional and most importantly, be ON TIME. Be there early by about 10 minutes, much better if your waiting on him rather than him wondering where you are.

The quality of reproduction in some newspapers is deplorable, it has been compared to printing on toilet paper. Don't be so fast to blame the photographers. What do they want? CHEAP, that's what they want. Expect to be offered next to nothing for your work, you have to pay for gas, equipment and your time out of a lousy 25 to 35 bucks an image.
