Hi Dave,
Nobody's commented yet, and though I'm sure I'm not well placed to do so, thought I'd offer up my impressions.
In the POTN requests for critiques I've read, particularly for children, a common issue seems to be getting enough light from different sides of the face, and especially around the eyes, where extra light helps the viewer feel like they're making powerful eye contact. I feel this could similarly benefit from more light. Maybe a softened flash, maybe simply reflected light, but incident on the front of the face from a little to the right of the camera (from the photographer's perspective).
Can't quite say why, but I fear I'm beginning to dislike pictures of grubby faces too - personally would be happier minus the reddish drop on the chin.
I'm not sure about the framing either... I had a look with the bottom cropped off just under the hand - seems tighter and punchier, but I don't know if it's better on balance or not. If not cropping further, then maybe some colour in the T-shirt or background?
Will have to have a go at this type of photography when I see my neices at Christmas :-).
Cheers,
Tony
