Hope you didn't get hurt while navigating the EOS room, avoiding D20 fireworks.
In any case. The reported 4 pics buffer disadvantage is a bit of an exaggeration IMO. How many times does a person really needs more than 2.5 fps with 4 frames max.
I'm saying all this because today, while leaving a 1/1.5 seconds between frames, I got 7 pics. I'm almost sure I could've gotten more, but the boat was too far by then to shoot.
What do you thing.

Although i dont exactly shoot 4 frames in one burst i do frequently fill the buffer up. Even when doing portrait style work.
The bigger issue though is the write time. Either way, it is one of the biggest disadvantages of digital photography. It seems to be gone now (just as soon as they can fix the raw buffer issue). I can take 23 shots now and not worry about waiting for it to catch up, kind of like on a film body (in which case you must usually put in more film)

I think in most cases the buffer is sufficient.
For fast action it is not so good but You can get decent results.
Here I have some photos from Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38899&highlight=)
And here some cycling shots from Post Danmark Rundt (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=39535&highlight=)

Thank you guys,
Try this: shoot, say 1000, shoot, say 1001, shoot, say 1002. You get the idea.
In my today's experience, that exercise worked well.

I have a question to our resident "Sports" shooting expert, Mr. TQ
Aside from you being Da Bears fan (we'll play tomaraw, 49ers @ Bears.)
Seriously, been shooting boats & jet skis lately but there are things I find confusing:
Focus point(s): Tried the sports mode once, so I tried Tv this time. To make the subject in focus with Tv his very very distracting. Tried "all" focus points, but that's even more confusing, it kept on foucusing on the water/sea.
I know how to fix that problem: GET 100-400 L !!!. But until that time, what would you do in that situation.

ive filled the buffer up several times, if it had fast write speed it would be cool...cause it takes a while to drain the buffer back down :(
but its no major complaint

Try using the center focusing point only, and try as hard as you can to keep that point on your subject. As soon as you put that point on the water, the lens will focus to infinity and back, and there goes your shot. Keep the dot on the boat!!!
A 100-400 will be the same thing. (okay, a little better ;))

First off, i'm far from this sites sports shooting expert. I’ve only been doing it for about, well 2 months.
Second, i sure hope we dont get our asses handed to us like we did last year. I'm watching the game with some buddies of mine, i think you'll be surprised.
Anyways the way i keep, maintain focus with the 300D is by continually tapping the shutter button (halfway) so it continually readjusts it's focus, it's almost what AI/Servo does on it's on...almost. when shooting landscape i use center point, when shooting portrait i use the second to "top" focus point. Like i said, it's far from flawless, but it's the best tactic i've been able to get to work.

Thank you guys,
cmM: "Try using the center focusing point only, and try as hard as you can to keep that point on your subject."
That's the problem cmM, keeping focus on the subject w/ the center focus point.
I think TQ has something here:
"by continually tapping the shutter button (halfway) so it continually readjusts it's focus"
Did that today, it almost worked. Needs more practice I guess.
But still the question remains, somewhat. It's a bit of a distraction to 1st, lock the focus. 2nd, compose the pic. 3rd, shoot. By the time you are at step 2, the subject has already changed.
What do you think

okay....
If you shoot at the long end... say over 200mm at f/5.6, your DOF will be small, but not so small
Aanyway, as long as your subject is within the DOF, you don't have to press the shutter again to recompose. I only do that when necessary (when the subject has left my DOF)
It all depends how fast your subject is moving, and which direction your subject is moving.

Thanks cmM,
The subject(s) are not that fast. And they go east-west or west-east, in other words, a cross the frame.
See, by concentrating on "locking" the subject, I lose the composition. I don't want to shoot a jet skier going by...too boring. I want to capture the moment the water splashes! or he/she does a strong turn.
Maybe I need a longer zoom, and LOTS of practice.
Thanks again

in that case, it seems like the subject is fairly predictable. You can even do manual focus.
If you want to capture the moment, continous drive  !!! Shoot away. You'll capture it at least once !
And for jet skies.... you need a looooong zoom (like 500mm+), or a nice little waterproof enclosure, and go for a dipp.
Post pictures !!!

ha ha, good one. You haven't used a jetski before it seems :D they are anything BUT predictable. And that's the problem. Factor in the waves (for splash) then it gets a bit, but not much, complicated.
Kindly keep in mind that it's a "sea" not a lake.

you're right... I never tried shooting anything like that... I guess they're not as predictable as I though... I should try it some day - in a lake (I don't have an ocean available unfortunately)

This might be completely useless, but I thought I'd put it forward anyway. My camera (D70) has a 'nearest object' auto focus option. I've found that to be excellent for erraticly moving objects. If the 300d has a similar setting then I'd suggest you gave it a go.
