I am wondering what are the main differences between these two websites. I notice that onemodelplace charge a subscription fee while modelmayham does not. Is it worthwhile to pay? I am mostly interested in using these sites to find models to do fashion/creative shoots.

I have found the models on OMP to be more serious and reliable. MM has a lot of WannaBe's, who turn out to be unreliable....in my experience...

I've used both, and found the same results as Jim. I've only had two models flake out after scheduling shoots with no phone calls or contact, both from MM. The OMP models were a bit better, but I find professionalism lacking from most models on both sites with a few exceptions.
Compared to agency models, I've found almost all models from OMP and MM definitely less experienced. But for the purposes of testing and trying out new techniques and ideas, the cost is about right :)
One thing that I do hear OMP/MM models complain about is photographers not following up with images from the shoot. Because of this, I've had models request images on CD before they leave the shoot. I've convinced them of the value in waiting for the edited images, and even suggested they contact anyone I've worked with in the past (easily available by clicking on the models image in my profile) to verify reliability in that regard. Just something to keep in mind.
In my opinion, its worth the small fee if you average it out over all the shoots and models you may work with over a year. Ie, if you paid $100 and did 20 shoots over the year, its less than $5 a shoot. Thats great compared to $100-$200 an hr for an agency model!

Good advcies. I have heard some agencies send models to photographers to do portfolio shots on a tfp basis (rather than paying someone to do it). Is this a common practice?

Yes and no. It depends on the agency and the photographers work and reputation. I get a regular flow of both 'testing' as the agencies call it, and paid portfolio work. I've never received anything but TFP work from OMP or MM, with one or two exceptions.'
Agencies are pretty picky about what photographers they will send models to. They want to know they are professional, have a good reputation in the industry to avoid GWC's, and know they will get decent work from them. So yes, it is a common practice for the right agency/photographer partnership.

I have been on OMP for quite some time and MM not quite as long, but the model flake rate is about the same for both sites.
The main differences I see.
If you are looking for a nude or fetish model then OMP is mandatory as it is almost impossible to figure out which models do nudes on MM without looking at every portfolio. OMP's search engine lets you put in more discrimination in what you are looking for in their search engine. However of note, I think you have to be at least Gold level, but it may be Platinum to get full utility out of the search engine. I am Platinum so I can use it all.
If you are willing to pay the higher levels in OMP you get higher search placement as well as bigger and more images (the second is good and bad). For MM they eesentially have two levels free and VIP, I actually don't know how you get VIP status on MM, but it gets you 40 instead of 20 images.
Meanwhile, the forums on MM are way more interesting. The Off-Topic and General Mayhem forums are more fun the DPReview camera forums, but the Model and Photographer forums are closer to more serious. Meanwhile OMP forums are heavily controlled and not nearly as interesting, I only visit those on rare occasions.
I will mention that except for Hurricanes in Florida, OMP is the most stable of the two, with MM having problems about once every 2 or 3 months of some kind or another.
In my opinion there is no reason not to use both. Pay for OMP get the better searches and the email travel notices and use MM for additional searches and the forums. Several models are on both, but many are only on one or the other.
Just my opinion and experience
For reference I am photographer #8493 on OMP
and #165421 on MM, which should give an idea of when I joined each.
I think they are up to 550,000 on MM all types.
close to 342394 models, 203060 other members on OMP.
but of course that doesn't say how many are currently there.
But both are close to the same numbers in total.
Final note: also consider Craig's List it seems to work for some people as well, but I have been told it has a slightly higher flake rate.

ha, I just made a thread about how I gave OMP a shot and thought the site was clunky and disorganized. One Model Place is not worth the subscription fees.

OMP seems pretty organized to me, but then I have been using it for over 5 years now I think.
Except for the login, everything seems to be easy to find that I need and it makes it very easy to search for models and the travel notices alone have made it worth it to me.
I will admit MM is a bit easier (except for the bulletins) except the search engine is not as good. But MM is more like MySpace so a lot of younger folks like it better because of that layout. I happen to be after utility though and so far OMP has been worth it to me.

Thanks for the word of wisdom again. What about the quality and diversity of models in OMP compare to MM? I also found that MM goes down from time to time. Somewhat frustrating.

On a slightly different note, are there other modeling sites worth checking out besides omp and mm? For now I am interested in building portfolio rather than looking for paid work.

There are some, but mostly either focused on one type of model
such as www.blackmodelplanet.com (what type they are focused on should be obvious )
modelplace.com got bought by onemodelplace.com, but was never as good but had some models OMP and MM didn't.
There is an art model site, but I would have to hunt through my business cards to find the URL, but all of the models on that site expect money (and they usually deserve it ).
If building portfolio then MM and OMP are best and just expect a lot of no shows, unless you are paying them good money. There is also craig's list, but I have only a few models on the list in my area and they are not really what I look for.
Just my experience,

I use MM for trying new things and pick up some models who want to pay for port work. I also use it for arranging multiple photog shootouts and every now and then I will use it to find a hair stylist or makeup artist. My sister uses it for her modeling coaching business.

Internet models are not really models. Unless they are repped by an Agency, I do not want to deal with them. I worked as a model for eleven years before I started Assisting and then shooting my own work. There are a few models on OMP and MM that are actually working but you'd be better off introducing yourself to the local Agencies. The odds of them not being prepared or no showing is much higher when they don't have a Booker to answer to.

I've found that if a model has a OMP port they will have a MM port.
I use both sites for paid and TFP projects.
I've had problems with models from both sites.
But as Far as site layout OMP is good.

I haven't used OMP yet, but I've had some pretty good experiences with MM. True, its full of "wanna-be" models, but there are a lot that are willing to work with inexperienced photographers and/or are willing to try new ideas.

I've been on OMP for six or seven years, and I prefer it over MM> I see a very diffent 'look' for lack of a better term, of the models on MM. I think it attracts more of the 'wannabe' models because it's free, and those are usually the ones who don't appreciate the hardwork that goes into modeling and are more likely to flake. I'm not really qualified to speak in terms of the quality of the models, but I have found the photographers who book me through OMP to be more reliable than those on MM. If you're going for the free route, why not just set up on myspace? They have a networking option and groups that you can join.

Glad to have found this thread... signed up on both. Haven't explored OMP as much as MM yet. See lots of potential uses of MM but almost equal amounts of flakes. Also, to give credit to POTN... learning from you guys I feel much more confident about my work compared to some of the "photographers" there...lol. Really appreciate the quality of photographers here to learn from.

As mentioned from my experience most MM models are flakes.
Can't quite figure it out.
They got some terrible shots done with a PS camera at a bar as on their profile and yet when you try to arrange a shoot (paid or TFPCD) they flake.
Wonder how far their going to get with some pics taken in bar with PS camera.

I agree with a lot that has been posted. MM'rs are total Flakes! For as many shoots as I have set up I have had about 70% of people cancel or just not show up with no call or email. Even people who contact me flake...what's up with that?
I have even had models ask if they can bring their kids!!
