Hi all, I have questions concerning Canon S60. I bought this camera two weeks ago, and found out that the barrel distortion on the left bottom of the lense really annoy me. This distortion occured on a full wide shot. This was my first digital camera, and this distortion really freak me out. I returned if for an exchange of the same camera hoping that the new one would have less distortion. Obviously, I just got a new one returned to me yesterday, and checked it out. The same barrel distortion appears at the exact place on the lense. My impression is that all Canon S60 has the same barell distortion. Does any S60 owner have the same barrel distortion like I do? I don't know whether to keep it, or return it but I gotta have a camera for my oversea trip in two weeks. :?:

the barrel distortion is common on every s60 because of its wide angle lens, read the reviews.. and look sample pictures and you will see the barrel distortion.
"This distortion occured on a full wide shot" exactly it is because of it wide angle.. try zooming for taking pictures and distortion will disapear. I know that sucks..
i want to buy a digital camera and i was between s50 s60 and a80,
the s50 its an excelent camera but its old now... s60 is the newer version of s50 but it sucks... and a80... is going to be disconitnued
but with the release of the A95 i think i have a winner.
i will wait for the reviews and people comments.

Barrel distortion is a pain on linear subjects at close range. But it's a fairly common problem on most wide angle lens, and worse on compact ones. I did some comparison shots between the S60 at wide angle and my Minolta 7i, and there was really very little difference.
Here are the comparison pictures (http://goeurope.about.com/library/phot/bl_s60_barrel_1.htm) if you're interested.
I think for the size, the S60 is a camera with great possibilities. I use wide angle a lot in my work, and for distance shots the barrel distortion isn't noticable.

I have Canon A95 and have taken excellent pictures, but the parallax/barrel distortions are there. I wonder if there is a way to get rid of these distortions. Would appreciate receivng any suggestions. I know of plug-ins which help out to some degree, but correcting the problem at the camera source itself would be ideal. :(

The distortion on wide angle side can not be fully eliminated. This is based on the fact that if you eliminated the barrel distortion when you take a shot on an object which is perpendicular to the line of sight, then you will get another kind of distortion when you take a shot on an object which is not perpendicular to the line of sight. What the manfactory is doing is balancing the distortion so that get acceptable result on most cases.
Actually, you can not get the "taste" of wide angle if the barrel distortion is fully eliminated. :)
