a tripod, a lowepro Micro Trekker 200, is not in the picture and ofcourse a G2 to take this picture.

I wonder what I need next   the sad thing is that I'm just a beginner in photography.

From my standpoint and from what I've purchased so far, paying for the equipment isn't the problem. My problem is how I'm going to explain to the wife where it came from and how it got paid for. I've been successful so far. It's a gift I have.

After I buy all my photography equipment and spares for each  . Then I'll look for a photographer girl and live happily ever after in a photography studio.

I've bought equipment but need more practice. That is where the photography improves, as everyone knows. This forum has increased my knowledge of photography and I read it every day. Now I just have to get out there more often and shoot shoot shoot. Evaluate, then shoot shoot shoot some more.

Common sense.

I did just get my first L lens (17-40mm) and the clarity is amazing so I do have to say that the equipment does help to some degree.

Danny Boy ... I know what you mean. I had my 10D about 5 weeks and the Mrs didn't know I had bought a new camera. I was shooting a dog show and a friend of hers said to her "WOW, that's a really nice camera John has!" I get a tap on the shoulder a few minutes later ... "Why does that camera strap say Canon instead of Sony?" ... "Uhhh, I've had this for some time :? "

I got by for 4 months before she found out about the white lens I bought in the spring (100-400 L)

So she went out and bought a shotgun after she found out about the 10D. She just found out about the lens last week so I'm expecting a big hit in the checkbook very soon

BTW ... it's not that I lie to her. I figure no need to tell her and start a fight (actually, we wouldn't fight about it ... she just buys what she wants. Anyway, her hobby is a little more expensive (and work for me) than mine is. She trains and shows our dogs. So far this year ... new van and a van load of accessories not to mention entry fees ... OUCH!

Johneo,

Yup, you are right. Sometimes it's better to just get what you want and explain later then to talk about it ahead of time and never get it. Just have to make sure you can afford it and not do really major damage control later in that respect.

It sure is a fun hobby!!!

...this is funny. I'll tell you what the real trick is though. You've got to have kids and be good at shooting them. For example; I end up getting paid unexpectedly for some extra work I did....spent it all on L glass... wife says, "it was HOW much?" 1 week later oldest daughter has a dance recital and I shoot, shoot shoot...... in the car on the way home I show the wife some on the LCD...and instantly the L becomes a great purchase. Then, 6mos after buying the 300D I upgraded to the 10D.... Wife says, "so how much did you sell the old one for?" "So, you have an extra $400 laying around?" .... 2 weeks later, I shoot a wedding and get hired for another wedding at the reception... Again, the 10D becomes a great purchase when photos of the bride and our 2 girls show up on the monitor...

I'm telling ya... you've got to have kids. :) Of course, I'm only half serious. My girls are wonderful (even if they didn't help me acquire new gear) and my wife is actually quite supportive of my addiction. I am going to resist the 20D though. Will wait for a few more weddings to go for the Mk II I think.

-daniel

Danny Boy
20th of August 2004 (Fri), 17:09
Yeah, I think kids are the key too. My kids are 7 and 3 and I want to shoot them in action with sports and possibly sell the pics to the parents. Just trying to supplement my income and recover the cost of equiptment. I think JABACo contributed to a long thread about this a while back which was encouraging and very informative.

Now all I have to do is figure how I'm going to introduce the 50mm 1.8 and the 17-40mm L (as mentioned above) I recently purchased. YIKES!!!

Danny Boy
20th of August 2004 (Fri), 17:11

dsze
20th of August 2004 (Fri), 17:12
Yeah, I imagine the 50 1.8 will be much easier to intro than the 17-40.... good luck on that one. Maybe just say something like, "Yeah, I got this amazing little 50 for like 70 bucks... its amazing quality for the price..." and leave it at that... maybe she'll assume the 17-40 was a similar deal. :)
...just kidding...tell your wife the truth..

Hi all,

Just dont talk to me about money. Debt isn't a neccessary evil it's a lifestyle choice.

Keep telling the wife "No darling I dont need any more lenses" trouble is that 135 f2 sounds really interesting, so does something around 20-35mm thats prime and fast, 24 1.4 or 35 1.4. She was very understanding when I got the 85 1.2, not so much with the 200 1.8. Gonna have trouble with getting anything else in the bag (camera not wife). Her comment was if you cant lift it anymore then you cant buy any extra stuff, guess I better get down the gym and do some weights. Ohh well you only live once, whoever has the most toys when he dies wins.

If you are only broke you are doing great. The rest of us are broke and in debt. I gotta be close to $5000 CDN spent so far.

$2700 - First purchase of DRebel, CF card, 2nd battery extra lens etc.
$800 - 2 weeks later on a 75-300 lens
$500 - 1 week after the zoom on a 420EX speedlight & 50MM 1.8 lens.

10 months nothing much other than a bigger bag.

In the last 2 weeks, Rebel and 75-300 gone and $2000 more to cover the difference for a 10D, new manfrotto 190 tripod and 222 joystick head a 70-200 F4 L and some filters.

I currently have in my shopping cart at B&H another $1000 for another lens, some more filters and a 1 GB CF card. I just haven't had the balls to hit the checkout button yet.

Damn, thats way more than $5000. See, now I am even lying to myself about how much I really spend, not just to the wife :D .

:? WOW :? You folks talking about what you've spent on camera equipment got me thinking and decided to take an inventory and add up all my equipment.

Not counting the camera equipment I had "Before going digital", but including what little (in comparison) I've spent on my film cameras since Feb '99 when I ordered my 1st digital ... easily over $10,000  (not to worry, as I should have no problems selling it in a bankruptcy sale   )

Ohhhh, I hope my wife never reads this

Great news is I'm making money with my photography now ... my sister in law just gave me $5 for some 4x6 prints she wanted  looks like I can have lunch today :D

Doing the math ... that is only about 33 cents per shot ... think of all the money I've saved on the cost of film

dsze
21st of August 2004 (Sat), 09:11
Sdcoates brings up a good point. Sure I've got THOUSANDS invested in my current equipment, but I don't go to bars, I don't go out dancing, I don't even buy clothes for myself... hey, I think I just hit on something...no clothes...maybe I should go out dancing and make a little extra $$ on the side to help pay for more equipment! See, its a viscious cycle!

Seriously, photography just happens to be where our priorities are as opposed to bar-hopping, expensive watches, expensive scotch with crystal glasses, etc.... A few thousand for something that keeps us so entertained and out of trouble is hardly a burden IMO. I think most spouses completely understand this (within some amount of reason).

....and back to the kids aspect. They are only little once. I don't want to be looking back at my photos in 10 years and thinking, Gosh, I wish I would have had the kind of equipment that I have now. If only I could make them little again and steal a few shots.

Now, for the coffee maker box. This guy is genius. Canon totally needs to start offering "discrete" packaging of L glass in disguise boxes (coffee makers, etc) That could buy us some serious time! :)

Excellent points, dsze. Whereas I have obviously spent a lot of money in the last year and only recently have found it necessary to disguise my purchases with coffee maker boxes, the fact is, the money I used came directly from the liquidation of another hobby I'd been in for over forty years. None of our 'househould' money was used for camera equipment. Ultimately, I will probably be money ahead because my former hobby was even more expensive than what I'm doing right now. Using an argument that only requires a slight abuse of logic, you could say my camera equipment represents 40-some years of collecting.

It's funny in a way....people will roll their eyes at the amount of money I've spent on photography in the last year, but they'd think nothing at all of me buying a boat that might cost twice as much, and would sit in my driveway 51 weeks out of the year. I wonder to myself, in the span of 10 years, which is likely to be worth more? The rusty, leaky, out-of-style unused boat sitting out in the driveway, or my lens collection? In the meantime, I've had the almost daily use of them.

http://home.insightbb.com/~photographs/wakeboarding/index.htm

As boat-owners know quite well, nothing marine related is affordable! The good thing is; my boat is older and I've owned it for some time now. The bad thing is, it is a V8 towboat and I could have the 20D now for what I spend on gas in a summer, and of course I have to keep up with a new board/bindings every year or two. :)

See? We've just helped each other make our respective points.

My parents had a boat for a while. It was too big to trailer (31' cabin cruiser with a flying bridge), so they had to keep it tied up in a yacht harbor in Los Angeles.

My dad had a plaque on the wall that read: "A boat is a wood-lined* hole in the water into which you throw money."

(Most boats back then were wood-hulled, and only occasionally, fiberglass over wood)

Dan:

I've really used it very little. I just haven't been in a place where my laptop wasn't readily accessible, so using the Flashtrax would just be an unnecessary extra step.

General impressions are good, however. It seems to get reasonable life from its battery, and the display is certainly better than the camera’s LCD.

I've dabbled in the world of audiophilia over the years where $15,000 speaker cables, $75,000 turntables (for vinyl records), $12,000 phono cartridges (with non-replaceable styli) and $150,000 speaker systems are real world products that people actually buy. But if you really want a decent ampifier, try this:

I have decided when to get married (the earliest):
After I buy all my photography equipment and spares for each  . Then I'll look for a photographer girl and live happily ever after in a photography studio.

 ...okay, I think I've had a long week. I'm going home now

Two of you buying camera equipment ....  Man,you are gonna be REALLY poor!

Allow me to divert this thread a bit. And I'll ask armatures/hobbyists like myself. Pros plz don't answer.

Why and what do you shoot.
Anything and everything. My Camera's always w/me. Wife actually sets ground rules on certain outtings because she wants our time to be about US, not me and the camera... go figure! But, she's getting my 10D now so some of the lines are blurring. I'm excited for her to determine she needs a lens we don't have ;).

I'm supposed to be learning portrait photography to stave off the expenditures of our kids studio costs (wife is intent on covering all reachable wall space in the house). But, I shoot everything from dragonflies to concerts and have only been in the obsession about a year. So, I'm not really good at any of it. Oh wait, I'm really good at obsessing over gear!

Welcome to my world...

An there is no 12-step program to fix us :(

Hi CindyS,

the only 12 step program that I am aware of is the one that takes you 12 steps further away from the camera shops doorway. I'm currently fighting with myself about the 135 f2 which is one of the cheeper L's. Just see if I can last till after my holiday in September. By the way has anyone tried teh 135 f2 with a 1Ds? If you have, whats it like?

Best regards

Bearsummer,

Judging by your equipment list... your "12 step" program is a complete failure  that is unless your steps away from B&H's door includes carrying at least one Canon Box every trip!

Hi Sketcher,

Hello, I'm BearSummer and I'm a L-cholic. As the great Oscar Wilde said, "I can resist everything except temptation", I dont want every lens, just most of them. I admit it, I've got it bad, but who can say no to good gLass and when you have somewhere like Park Cameras relatively local its even harder to say no.

Best regards

BearSummer

Are you broke?
Are you married? I'm am. Don't know until when.
My wife keeps yelling at me about to sell my white lens to pay the bills!

I have to explain my wife that our kids are young only once ... and that we'll certainly later love to look at those great 'L' quality shots of them showing them begging for bread at a busy corner

Best regards,
Andy

Best thing I did was set my daughters up with Canon EOS cameras a few years back  . Now everytime I want to upgrade, I pass stuff off to them. That way I can say to the wife .. "J needs a new lens .. if I get this one she can have my old one" .. seems to work so far. Now if only I can justify that 550EX ..

Er... being broke means you listened to all good advice here, otherwise you'd have some crappy 2 megapixel Casio or at best a Nikon Di-Di 7 or whatever their plastic thingie is called these days, and some cheap plastic kit lenses with a 256 4x speed CF and you'd be shooting full auto mode to jpeg. There.

Just kidding.

I had a day dream like that in high school (in the 70's). Life hit me too soon. *sigh*
