I modified a slide duplicator (B&H GBSD, $50) to capture the full slide with a 1.6x camera (10D). It was *far* simpler than I had anticipated, and can be done by anyone with only a couple small screwdrivers!
Here is the story...

Mandatory 20D content: I have no plans to replace my 10D with a 20D, it is a nice improvement but not likely to improve my photography. ;)

This makes me wonder if reproducing slides in this manner would result in a much better reproduction than from my Nikon LS-2000 scanner, which Im not too impressed with.

I compared the same slide as scanned on my Minolta Scan Dual II with the image from the duplicator. The scanned version doesn't look any better when viewed full size on a monitor but it is superior when zoomed in. If I were going to make a print larger than 4x6 I would prefer the scanned version.
My (older) scanner is 2820 dpi, the camera method is about 2000 dpi *but* the camera shares it's resolution between the three colors where the scanner is 2820 dpi for *each* color. No wonder the scanner file is so much larger, and somewhat better.
My main use for the 'scanned' slides is slide shows viewed on a monitor (which is about 1 MP) so the camera method is still much more resolution than I need and it is *much* faster than scanning.
I will probably set my 10D to 'small/fine' for most of the images and even that is more than I really need.
