I am going to purchase a Canon EOS 1D Mark II. What type of lens should I purchase? I will be doing sports and portrait work. I am new to the Canon product line. I have always owned Nikon.
I was considering the Canon EF 70-200L f/2.8 USM IS zoom, and the 50mm f/1.4 USM.
I would appreciate your input.
Thanks

The "Ultimate" sports lens for the "1" series is the fabled 300mm f/2.8L
The combination of this particular lens itself and the 1 series AF system is the fastest AF around.
If 200mm is long enough for you by all means. the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS happens to be Canon's "best" telephoto zoom in many repsects. (Speed, AF tracking etc...)
If you can sacrifice some aperture and AF speed.. the 100-400mmL IS is another great choice of that lenght is helpfull.. but @ f/5.6 this is an outdoor in the daytime lens.
For portraits the 50mm f/1.4 does work well.. with the MkII's 1.3X crop factor that approx 65mm...
Better yet.. look to the equally affordable 85mm f/1.8.
Welcome to Canon :)
