Remember the move "The Birdcage" with Robin Williams.

When the mother who had lost her glasses, finished the soup revealing the explicit Grecian scene depicted in the dinnerware she said, "Oh, I think it's three boys playing leap-frog."

So maybe the smileys are just "hugging".
