I know that 50 mm is considered a "standard" lens for 35 mm sensor. My zenit has 55mm lens, but that thing is quite wide.

If I want to do portraits and all around indoor low light lens, will I be better off with the 50mm or 35mm? It has to be able to do portraits of the chest and up, but while I had 50/1.8 I found that it's a bit too long for the indoor shots.

I don't like the 50/1.8 and will go with the 1.4 "usm", so the price is pretty much the same.

Hi Doc !
The 35mm is a wide-angle lens which changes the perspective in a very un-flattering way if you shoot closeup faces. It makes the nose look BIG !
Even the 50mm is still wide for a real closeups, but it should be OK for full / half body portraits. You can see the examples in the following gallery, almost all shots there were made with the 50mm f/1.8 MKII - http://www.pbase.com/olegis/katya&page=all

Your sig line indicates that you have a standard Rebel, which is a film camera, as opposed to the Digital Rebel.

The word "Standard" refers to kit lense...

the price of the 1.4 is like twice the price of the 1.8.

What I mean is that the 35mm and 50/1.4 is about the same price. 50mm being 100 bucks more. :?
