Superb shapes! Love the rainbow colors of the first 3 and would love to see the last one with 2 stronger colors (did you use 2 incense sticks for that one?) :) Great job!

Thanks for commenting Bea
In the first three the colour is there and its just saturated and made more vibrant in pp , in the last its just one incense stick but the incense burned with a different tone to the wooden stick its coated on (I pick up all different types while out and about and they burn differently) so when shot it was lit with a diffused white light and had bluey white tone and brownish tones to the smoke which hue and sat adjustments in pp , the colouring is pretty subtle because it gets a bit dirty ? if I overdo it.

Hi Ben
I "borrowed" some thoughts from TMR design , he used many small coloured gels in a patchwork design to light backgrounds and it seemed to me it would look cool on the smoke.

Excellent photos - love 1 + 3 for colour and the twirl on no 4 is great
So if i read this thread correct (and the linked thread) you made up a mosaic gel sheet as per TMR and used that with your flash? hopefully i have interpreted the treads correctly. any how what ever you did has excellent results.

How Do You Put Color In It?
Hi
The colour in the first 3 is done by putting coloured gels in front of the flash which lights the smoke , in the last the natural tints of the smoke when shot with a diffused white flash are altered in post processing by adjusting the hues and saturation.
hope this helps

Hi Andy
Thanks for the comments & yes you got it , as well as the mosaics made up from the gel swatches ,Ive bought coloured gel sheets and cut them as desired some of the colours show up more dust particles than others and they can be a pain to remove , the patchwork of gel I clamp on the front of barndoors and I found using a grid cuts down on stray dust and smoke that may be in the room.
Best wishes

Peacock - is there any chance of a pic to show the sheets in place with the flash. iI have never used seperate flashes and am trying to picture the set up.
Thanks

Lovely!
Have you tried putting them through NeatImage? It would really work for this kind of shot; moving away fron the grittiness and smoothing them down.

Hi Ben
I do filter about half of the to take away the grittynees , some I just prefer with the noise/grit it seems to make them more dimensional as the colours fade more gradually if that makes sense ? some look awesome heavilly filtered and with the contrast upped .

Hi Andy
Just to give you and idea , if using a speedlight it really is just a case of cobbling something together , using normal gels they just slot in behind the grid in the barndoors , its just so much easier to clip these on the front of the barndoors , they stay cooler and you can rotate them quickly for different colours/effects.oh and the smoke is usually 8-12 inches from the gel.

Really nice John. I'm glad to see other people using this idea, but more important, I'm glad to see images like yours being produced without spending a ton of money on specialty gear.
Thanks for sharing those John. I'd love to see more.

Rather than start a new thread I figured I'd post one of my smoke shots.
My setup is very simple. I have a B800 with a red gel, 20° grid and barn doors to the right of the smoke. On the left side is a 32" soft gold reflector. The ONLY pp done is bringing up the Vibrance a little in Lightroom.

Hope you get some good shots ! not sure where you get them from overthere but searching should reveal where the free swatchbooks are from and if you want to buy the square gels shop around on google , the price difference is huge but the can be had cheaply

Looks good , nice rich colour , its the flowing randomness of the smoke i love.
your set up is similar to mine , never used a reflector though . I have used a 2nd snooted light angled from the other side but further behind to shoot white or colours through contrasting the 1st light , also when using the mosaic gels you can leave patches of white to shoot through the colours.

Another method would be to put a prism in front of a light source and project onto the smoke. Low-tech I am....

do you have to have a black background or can you do it in the middle of a dark room? do you take pic from same side you took it from in the pic showing the setup? do you use flash as well or just side light?
