... if the new 20D does away with the use of the internal flash to provide light for focusing in low light situations?

It's a good question
I don't see any emittors except the self timer lamp on it... so the likely answer is that system remains the same.
It is definitly more fun to stun your victims before you photograph them. Although I turn that feature off with custom functions because I don't seem to get any af problems in low light. (No light would be different... but I don't do no light!)

Yes ... from the DPReview review:
AF Assist
Unlike the EOS D30 and D60 the EOS 20D doesn't have a dedicated AF Assist lamp. Instead it will strobe the flash which will assist the camera's AF system if required. The new AF system has a lowest light detection of -0.5 EV compared to the EOS 10D's 0.5 EV, it's likely that AF assist won't be as important on the EOS 20D.

I have a really funny pic of all my friends squirting/w closed eyes after I "focused" on them :D

Thanks Richard & Andy. So it looks like Canon improved upon some of the annoyances of the 10D and left some intact, like the strobing flash for low light situations.

The 20D does use the internal flash for low-light AF assist, just like the 10D does. What it doesn't have is the AF assst light on the side of the body like the D30, D60 and the old Elan models.

I know I have one of those old Elans. The focus was quick and accurate and the low light focus worked great. Why Canon could not have incorporated the Elan system into the 10D is a mystery to me.

Yeah,abit of a shame that.
The low distraction infrared light such as the eos 5 is the best
At least the focus on the 20D shouldn't need the flash assist much with it's lower light focus capability :)
