I just shot my first large 50th anniversary celebration on saturday. All of the formal shots went well. Later after reviewing the candids that were taken throughout the day, I noticed a shadow at the bottom of some of the pictures. Since my wife had been shooting with my 10D while I shot some video, I thought that she might have had her finger in front of the camera flash. I looked at a couple that I knew for sure that I had taken, using the on-camera flash, and had the same problem. Took the camera out, set my Sigma 24-135 lens to 24 and there was the shadow on the floor. Removed the lens hood, and it went away. I knew that this was a problem going into the shoot and totaly forgot all about it.
Remove the lens hood when shooting wide.

Me too. I immediately abandoned the onboard flash and bought a 550. Looks like the 20D's onboard flash may be somewhat of an improvement. Still, an external flash is best.

I actually encountered the problem first time on my G2 with a wide-angle lens on it, then again later on the 10D. I tend to be very mindful of it now.

What realy ticks me off is that I started out using my 420EX, then took it off to better maneuver the inside of the house.

either take it off, or get a lens hood like the 17-40's hood, which is 1 foot accross, blocks everything including your eyesight, but does not mess with your shot :P

You shouldn't have written that. Now we'll get a post about how a dIYer made his out of a shoe box.

yup, same thing happened to me with 17-40mm, even with hood off, there is a slight shadow.
with 1D, this will never happen, and 20D looks like fixed this problem

I saw the same issue with my 17-40 (no hood) using on-board flash .. how does the 20D get over this .. have I missed something ??

they raised the pop-up flash quite a bit, so it clears big lenses.
