For those of you who remember, I was disappointed in my 70-200L in that on my 10D, it lacked the sharpness that it aparently delivers on film. It took a while for Samys to get in the lens that I wanted, but now I finally have the 70-300 DO.

This was taken from a measured 12 feet away, at 300mm, f5.6. I used the upper focusing element, aimed at the rule.

The first image is a 1/16 reduction of the full frame, in other words, this is what the viewfinder saw.

The second is a 1/16 full resolution CROP of the same shot.

Make your own decision about sharpness, but so far I am very happy with the lens. $500 less than the L, 100 mm longer reach (160 on the 10D), smaller and lighter to the point that is makes up for the lost stop and a half (to my mind at least), easier to carry, and less likely to frighten the subject.

The addition of "Deep Impact" into what amounted to an otherwise respectable collection of Movies and a perfectly good architects ruler has rendered the whole test pointless, and leaves nothing but a bad taste in my mouth....

Of course I make no comment about the Striesand.. "[i]Not that there's anything wrong with it"[i/]

I traded a used previous-generation Canon 70-210 f4 EF (non-L, non-USM, push/pull front-focusing) zoom for a brand new 70-300 DO IS USM a couple of weeks ago.

I'm very happy with the results. I had purchased the used lens for $135 when I picked up my Digital Rebel last fall, and got a $100 trade in on it. Not bad -- $35 for almost a year's 'rent' on a decent lens.

Anyway, the 70-300 DO IS USM has been very impressive for my use. 100mm (160 on the DR) more reach, 3rd generation IS, is half the length of the old lens, and decidedly lighter.

Thinking strongly about the new 17-85mm IS EF-S just announced. If it's any near as good as Canon claims, that lens, along with the 70-300 DO IS would make a good two-lens take-anywhere travel pair.
