For those of you who remember, I was disappointed in my 70-200L in that on my 10D, it lacked the sharpness that it aparently delivers on film. It took a while for Samys to get in the lens that I wanted, but now I finally have the 70-300 DO.
This was taken from a measured 12 feet away, at 300mm, f5.6. I used the upper focusing element, aimed at the rule.
The first image is a 1/16 reduction of the full frame, in other words, this is what the viewfinder saw.
The second is a 1/16 full resolution CROP of the same shot.
Make your own decision about sharpness, but so far I am very happy with the lens. $500 less than the L, 100 mm longer reach (160 on the 10D), smaller and lighter to the point that is makes up for the lost stop and a half (to my mind at least), easier to carry, and less likely to frighten the subject.
