View Full Version : Poor Mans Rocket Blower?

Well I recently aquired a few specks of dust on my sensor and had no way of cleaning it. I do not have a rocket blower or any sensor cleaning accessories so I started thinking.

I remembered I have a turkey baster that I never have really used in the kitchen...so I get it out, go into sensor cleaning mode, pump a few shots of air onto the sensor, and sure enough it worked great!

It removed all the dust specks I had (only a few small ones) and best of all I did not have to buy anything!

So if you are in need of a way to clean your sensor...try a baster, just make sure it is clean first :p

I was going to bash you about saving money on a $10.00 item.

I blow it. I take a few deep breaths first so there's no moisture in my breath and then blow.

I was going to mention that as well, i paid 8 bucks for my rocket blower, i thought that was pretty poor man already.

The ear cleaning bulbs sold in drugstores work well, too.

New and unused rectal syringes work well too.

I'm sure used ones work too provided they are cleaned. ;) Yeech....

An old foot pump for an air mattress can also work well and generate a good blow.

its funny to see how all of us (myself included) are so frugal when it comes to blowing our sensors. you'd think that we'd all be sure to buy a $10 rocket blower considering we're willling to spend so much on our camera equipment, but alas, i guess you guys are just like me, just saving up for that next piece of glass.

I thought the whole purpose of the rocket blower is that after it blows, it sucks air from the bottom of the blower, so you're NOT sucking back in the dirty air you just blasted (like you would with a turkey baster).

Just my thought...

i had all the cheap ones, and don't regret buying the rocket blower. totally worth it for powerful, clean air.

Ya, I know rocket blowers are cheap...but this was free! Have had it for years and it was just sitting around. The other thing was I wanted to keep shooting but the dust was starting to bug me...would have had to wait awhile to get it in the mail.

+$10 to my lens/tripod fund :p

You can just hold it "blown" and then suck in the air away from the camera.

So a cheap blower can suck - that's fine - blow the dust off then suck it up then take the blower/sucker out and dispose of the dust elsewhere. Works for me!

WOW! And in order to save a few bucks after I lost my lens cap I put a towel around the lens with a rubber band............boy am I good.

That's nuttn. I drilled a hole in my lens cap and made my 1D Mk3 into a pinhole camera so I don't even need to buy a lens!
