After 1.3 years and over 7500 shots, my G3 failed to start up last night. After shooting a series of images for stacking of the Globular Star Cluster M-13, I went to change cards and when I went to turn the camera on, nothing. I tried a different battery, even pluging it in, but nothing. I put it up and figured I would try it out again in the morning. BTW, still nothing.

I went back to the store where I got it from (name withheld) and found out I had purchased the extended warrentee, I was informed to go back to the camera department and choose my new camera. At first, I thought, AWESOME! However, G3 being discuntinued, I figured I would get a G5. Nope, they did not have any, anyehere in the region. Longer story short, I now have a brand-new Pro 1 and only spent $50 for the difference in price.

This certainly looks like a good turn of a bad thing.

How do you like it so far?

Best regards,
Andy

My first impressions are favorable. I am having to learn the locations of all the buttons again, but I do not see that as a problem. I was used to and comfortable with my G3 and could operate it in the dark... I will get there with the Pro1.

I have only sat with the camera going through the manual so far. Tonight, however, I am going on a photo shoot, so I will get to see how it performs in real life and in different conditions. We are photographing the "midway" at the state fair after dusk. Will get to see the low-light performance.

I do like the zoom ring. More for the Manual Focusing than actually zooming, as I find myself bumping it quite a bit. Again with the getting used to the new design.

As to the trade in, yes, it turned out ok. The only issue is all the gear for the G3 I still have. Oh well. I'll figure something out, I guess.

Take a look at the 'marketplace' forum ...

I am already planning on a large purchase of a DSLR later this year. After we receive a settlement for an accident we were in I will be able to get basically anything I want. However, I cannot be without a camera and I did not have $300 for the DRebel, especially since it is not the camera I want when I go DSLR.

The Pro 1 will get me where I need to go. The extra 4 MP will help in the sort term so I can print more of my shots larger, or crop more and still get a great 8x10.

Don't get me wrong. I loved my G3 and had never intended on getting rid of it after moving to the DSLR.

Awesome deal. Let us know when you figure out a way to prevent accidentally bumping the MF button. After 3 months, I still find I unintentionally hit (and activate) that damn MF button with my right thumb . :(

I think it was designed for photographers with short thumbs.
