Hey,
Hope this is the right place in the forum, but have any of you imported anything from B&H Photo in the US? The reason i ask is that i'm looking at getting a new body 4 new lens' and a 1.4 converter, i have worked out the i would be saving just over £1000!!!! before import tax and shipping, but even with the 12% import duty, (not sure if i would have to pay VAT as well) i would still save £700.
Can anyone give me advise or let me know about there experiance in doing this.
Cheers

I've done at lot of looking into buy from the US and from B&H (there's a lens I want...exchange rate...so on.....etc), however, there's a problem, unlike some ebay site B&H are above board, so you will be charged import tax on anything you buy from them
Camera bodies aren't subject to import tax, however you will pay 17.5%
Camera lenses are subject to import tax at 6.5% (ish), per lens, plus 17.5%
Not sure about 1.4x TC, but definitely subject to 17.5% and probably 6.5% as well....(you will be charged the import charges when you package reaches UK soil and may have to pay additional handing charges from the carrier as well) and then add delivery charges on top, when you do the Maths, you're not getting the savings you thought you were....That's if it's all official and above board.
There are ways around it, which some ebay business use, but if they get found out boy I don't want to be there when customs get their hands on the owner and (I think, but not sure) anyone who bought from them as well.
It's a pain in the behind that we are getting ripped off in the UK, paying these high prices for goods, only other suggestion is look at digitalrev or Onestop digital on ebay and take you chances.
Sorry Peter

How much does it cost to fly to NY? You will have to pay local sales tax which it think is 8.5% (don't know why I think that but I do) unless you arrange to ship to new jersey. Then you may get hit with smuggling if you don't declare it. Buy enough to make it worth your while. Take photos of the city life while you are there.

Thought about that as well, its about £400 rtn from london, but i guess you could always through away thr box's and just put everything in a new camera bag and claim you brought in the uk.

Don't bother with importing as you will lose around 25% overall. Check onestop-digital, and on eBay Kea and DigitalRev and then Kerso (a member here at POTN). No one is cheaper all the time. My guess is Kerso will do the best deal if you know prices elsewhere and haggle given you are spending lots.

The other alternative is to buy second hand from someone in the states. I've done this several times and I've had good experiences doing that.
