Error 1 or Error 84

I want to use a Canon D30 (don't ask) on telescope that has a Canon lens mount added to it. By itself it seems to work but when I add the 1.4 extender I get an Error 84 message. This error message (Error 1 on the 10D although I haven't tried it yet) has to do with the lack of communication between the camera/extender/lens. Now I know that the lens (the telescope) is as dumb as it can be but that's OK with me and I planned on using either M or Av. I also know that there's no AF of any kind and that OK too. I'd just like to get over this error message problem. Does the mount or the extender need to be modified somehow?

Can't you use a Barlow on the scope? Otherwise, I'd suggest taping (all) the contacts on the TC.
