I tested this lens on my 10D a few months back and had about a 10% focus accuracy (if that). Others have mentioned having similar results. So would the 20D give similar or better results?

the AF is brand new never seen before. So we'll know shortly (when it comes out)

Indications are, from Rob Galbraith's site, the focussing of the 20D will be much improved over that of the 10D. If I were a betting man, I'd willingly bet that this is the case :D .

20D's center focus point seems to be HP (high precision) so this will help. In my experience 85/1.2 really benefits from manual focusing at 1.2 (because of AF point sizes) and here 20D may be a step back as 20D has dimmer and smaller viewfinder. With Mark II manual focusing is quite easy and AF is accurate (but as I said too 'wide' for e.g. getting the eyeball instead of eyelashes).

Actually, the viewfinder is improved on the 20D compared to the 10D.
It's clearer, with a better, more neutral, and contrasty focus screen which apparently makes it much better for manual focusing than it's predecessor. All the reviews I've read say the viewfinder is the same size.

However, the MKII would be even better.

From Rob Galbraith

"The 20D viewfinder and its New Precision Matte Screen add up to a clearer, sharper image that's closer in quality to 1-series digital SLRs than the 10D, though the size of the viewfinder image is still about the same as the 10D"

"Newly-designed viewfinder shows approximately 95% of image captured, or about the same as the EOS 10D. A new, non-interchangeable focusing screen, dubbed the New Precision Matte Screen, is visibly superior to the somewhat cloudy and slightly soft New Laser Matte screen in the 10D."

DP Review

"The EOS 20D's viewfinder is clear and bright with a high quality eyepiece lens (very little corner distortion). It has an all new 'Precision Matte' focusing screen which is supposed to have a more neutral color response and provide better manual focus with faster lenses thanks to a steeper change in blur at the focus point (in use I have to agree, it's a noticeable improvement over the 10D which I never considered 'bad')."

Hmmm, I just read luminous landscape's review, and he seems to make a special point about complaining about the 20D's viewfinder. Every other review I've read has stated the opposite opinion. In addition, he says the noise on the 20D is the same as the 10D, while every other review has said the 20D is about 1 stop better at noise.
I wonder if LL got a bad sample...

with a little addition

the reviews are a bit contradicting on this issue.

We'll have to see for ourselves.

Best regards,
Andy

I agree.

It's funny though. Where all the other reviews seem to agree, luminous landscape tells a completely different story.

He seems to get a bad sample of everything lately...maybe it's just me. I think he's getting grumpy
