View Full Version : Extreme III or IV ?

I recently bought a 1D mk.III. During high rate bursts, my Ultra II's are not keeping up with the buffer (to be expected). So, I need to get a new card that will keep up better. I know with some bodies, it doesn't help to get faster cards as the camera can only write so fast. Will I significantly benefit if I ante up and get an Extreme IV CF card, or will an Extreme III card be nearly as good?

I am not familiar with the speed of the 1D mk.III but at 6.5fps with my 40D my Extreme III keeps up very nicely! It would do fine if your camera is anywhere near 6.5fps for sure! P.S. 2gb Ultra II cards are going on sale Black Friday at Staples for $15!

I would personally go for the Extreme IV if the cost is not significantly different for the size you are getting. Reason is it is twice the speed of the Extreme III in the computer (if you have the right reader) and if it doesn't keep up with the camera then exept for the Ducati edition, you are not going to find a much faster card.
I use a pair of Sandisk 8GB Extreme IV CF cards with my 1DsMkII and the speed limitation is the camera not the cards. I still hit the buffer occasionally, but it is rare (except near the very end of the card when it slows down a lot ).
I have some extreme III SD cards and the are noticeably slower both in camera and card.
Granted you have the MkIII, but if I am noticing a limit with Extreme III in a MkII then, you should also notice it with a MkIII. I would take into account it may be a an CF versus SD thing though.
Just my experience and opinion,

Extreme III, unless you're actually going to buy the Firewire card reader they sell for the Extreme IV. There's no practical difference between the cards otherwise (i.e. the Extreme III already supports faster write speeds than any current Canon camera is capable of).

That would be my assumption.

The Firewire card reader is the key.

I could honestly care less about how fast I can DL to my puter. My reader is pretty fast already. And, during DL, I just read these forums or get a sandwich or something.
My only concern is that my buffer get cleared as quickly as possible. So, if a III will clear out my buffer just as fast as a IV will, then I will definitely want to get the III since it is about $60 cheaper.
So, is the definitive answer that a III will be fast enough?

You are right with the III, it is fast enough. As you say it is the speed in the camera that you are interested in and not the download to the computer. The fire-wire reader is all about the download speed to the computer. Neil

very small difference between the 2 in camera, but if you have the firewire 800 reader and an extreme IV, downloading is about 3x as fast

Check out the link....sandisk recommends the III cards for your camera, I've had no problems with the 1gbyte versions for my 20D.

I love my IV's. I had issues with the III 8gb and got the extr IV 4gb and dont think about the cards anymore. But the facts say the extr III is more than enough. Plus the extr IV work great with the expresscard readers.

I think if I had a Mark III I would want to feed it only the best. Get an Extreme IV 8GB at least.... At 10fps you really should have the fastest available.
