View Full Version : 20D Noise Levels

There seems to be some confusion on this matter. The dpreview preview indicates clearly that at high ISOs the 20D is less noisy than the 10D, by about one whole stop. That's significant in my books.
Canon's website implies the lower noise of the 20D is even greater than this. I tend to trust the dpreview figures more.
Michael Reichmann's review (luminous-landscape) puts the 20D noise levels on a par with the 10D. In fact, if you want to nitpick, slightly lower than the 10D by a fraction of a db. He's going in the opposite direction.
Who's right? I don't know, but I'd sure like to find out.
Perhaps the highly intelligent forum members of luminous-landscape have sorted this out or offered some illuminating explanations. I don't know. I've been banned from the site. The forum site is so 'closed' one can't even view the comments without becoming a member. That's a dangerous precedent in my view.

I have found that dpreview is always optomistic and that luminous landscape to be pesimistic. This in all of their reviews mind you.
Read all the reviews you can, take it with a grain of salt, make a decision, and come to your own conclusions.

IT doensn't really matter for me.
All the reviews reassured me of my initial fear...........that 8 mpx equals more noise.
.........and the fact that its less then the 10D (even minutely less) is GREAT news!!

Why don't you delete the cookie for luminious landscapes from your PC and sign up with a different user name using a hotmail or yahoo address. It's what I've done in the past when banned from sites. So long as your IP address isn't static it works.

Thanks! These thoughts have occurred to me and maybe I'll eventually do just that. But, Hey!, I've got my dignity. I'm not a stalker.
Nevertheless, I'm genuinely concerned about the effect on a closed society that expels anyone with the temerity to ctiticise. It can become like a religious cult. It's a very sad day for me.

Canon will claim better as a way to obviously improve sales. I don't think it is a nice as claimed, and it seems to be proven that way, but nevertheless, the noise levels are very impressive indeed.
Cheers.

Yes! And that's the bottom line. How much better they are than the 10D may still be a matter of speculation. As far as I understand, Reichmann's $20,000 DXO Analyser only deals in JPEGS. It may well be that 20D jpegs are just as noisy as 10D jpegs. RAW is perhaps a different matter.

Yes,and there's another likely problem too
The example that MR got may well be different to others.
But even he says it is better, even if only in the 'texture' of the noise.
The greynoise pics on DPreview do look very good. There *is* an improvement for sure

Keep in mind that the tests done by dpreview and Luminous Landscape were done with pre-production cameras - Canon could tweak something in the software or even the hardware of the camera at the last moment before it goes into production, so actual production cameras might be subtly different from the tested pre-production models.
We'll just have to wait two months or so when the first users can tell us about their real life experiences with the 20D.

Hopefully before that, as the camera will be out in about 3 weeks.

And after it is available in the stores, it might make sense to wait for the C1 update to get the best possible in RAW conversion.
OK, it might make even more sense to get the camera before and use it with average RAW conversion

Are we looking at comparing apples and oranges here, as in comparing ISO/color noise and sound (shutter?) noise? dB (decibels) is a unit used for measuring sound. :?

Initial production units were placed in reps and reviewers' hands two days ago (Monday, Aug 23, 2004) for those that made the trek to Lake Success, NY. Some even got initial production units two days earlier (Saturday, Aug 21, 2004) via FedEx.
A friend in the area that has been connected with the Canon rep side for quite some time, received his production unit (serial number 4) on Saturday. He went to the Canon celebration in NY on Monday, and I've been trying to pry the thing out of his hands ever since.
I may have a chance this evening, before he has to turn it over to the area rep, who is about to go on a road trip with a couple of units to all his major accounts.
If I can get some shots, I'll post them on my pbase account, and put a link on here. So far, I have 18-55 EF-S, 50 f1.8 MKII, 85 f1.8, and 70-300 DO to try on the body if I can get any time with it.
Point being, production units are out there, but in very short supply at the moment. Large quantities are due to be at dealers mid-September, especially on the east coast. Don't know what the problem is with the west coast distribution, but hopefully Canon will get that fixed pronto. It's critical to them not to miss the date, because they want the major shipment buzz before Photokina and the NY show coming up in September, and also, of course, the Christmas season. I know of a husband/wife team in my area that have already decided to give each other one for Christmas. I figure that kind of thinking is going on elsewhere, too.
It should be a good holiday season for Canon...
