Hey all,

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.

I am planning on taking my 30d up to the L.A. auto show here and was wondering if you guys could offer some advice so I can grab the best shots possible there.

Like I said, I've got a 30d, also have a 420ex, and a tripod.

I'm pretty much a newb at using the flash and don't have any diffusers or anything. I could do the index card method or pick something up before going though.

Anyways, back to my question, what will be the best way to get great photos at the show?

I have never been but from photos I have seen the vehicles are obviously in large open spaces with a lot of different light sources all over (and it is indoor).

Should I just go with the tripod and camera? Would the flash offer any benefits in that environment?

Thanks!

ck

the tripod will be extra weight if you bring it. Doubt you could get people out of the way long enough, and I've heard venues treat tripods as a liability and prohibit the use of one during events such as that. (people could trip on an extended leg)

Go with the fastest widest angle lens you have. Flash might be hard depending on how the cars are lit.

Just my $.02, FWIW.

Thanks for the response.

I was worried about those exact issues of taking my tripod. Crowded, more to lug around, and not knowing if I could use it. Looks like I'll leave that home, or in the car at least (that way it's there just in case).

Thanks again!

Some of the coolest photos I've seen done at indoor car shows have been HDR. Try doing a search on flickr and see what I mean.

The worst shots are with flash. It's just not possible to light a car with a few flashes...that's why HDR seems to work so sell in that situation.

Also, it's a great idea to bring a really long lens to come in on details like rims, grills, etc.

And don't forget to take a few shots of the booth bimbos while yer at it:)
