Hi all,

Love this site........

I'm VERY new to the 300D, so I thought I would post a couple of my first pictures. Nothing special, but comments would be appreciated.

Mike,

Good photos. Were these hand held or tripod? Was it natural light, or was there a reflector or flash fill-in?

What lens? What focal length?

Mike,

Wow! That's a steady hand you have for 1/80 sec. on a 55mm telephoto shot. My nerves must be shot from riding my Harley too much. Doesn't the "camera shake" icon come on at that setting? :?: :)

Wow, nice pics! You used the kit lens? Really nice colours and lighting.

Thanks for all the comments. Been a few years since I've done any serious photography. I used to have an EOS many moons ago, but haven't bought a good camera until I got the 300D.

@Don
Not too sure about the "steady hand", more a case of luck I think. :D

Mike,

I checked it out on my Pro1.
For a shutter speed of 1/80 sec., the "camera shake" warning icon comes on at a focal length of approximately 13mm (about 55 mm equivalent). So at 55 mm (200 mm equivalent), you were deep in the "camera shake zone".

Steady hand or good luck, either way you did a good job of holding it steady.

Don,

Where is the "camera shake" icon on the 300D?

The 300D has a larger sensor than the Pro1.
So 55 mm is not equivalent to 200 mm, but to 90 mm.

But the photographs are very nice

Best regards,
Andy

Mike,

I was mistaken in thinking the Pro1 had a larger sensor because it is 8.0 megapixels instead of the 300D's 6.3 megapixels. Andy's observation seems to be right on. (Thanks for the explanation Andy.) I haven't found the focal length multipler of the Pro1 published anywhere, but if you take the equivalent to actual ratio, the multiplier is about 3.9. The published multiplier for the 300D is 1.6. Big difference.

When you shoot 55 mm focal length on your 300D, that is equivalent to 90 mm which is more like a portrait lens, definitely not telephoto. Still good for hand held but not in the "camera shake" range as I originally thought.

I checked the detailed review in Steve's Digicams and could find no mention of a camera shake icon for the 300D. I guess they figure 300D owners are smart enough to know when camera shake becomes an issue.

All these features and different image sensor sizes are so confusing. :?

Think I'll stick to pointing and shooting..... :D

No, seriously, I appreciate the comments and I've learnt a bit along the way. Thanks to all.

I look forward to spending a fair bit of time on this board, and risking a few more uploads.

Until the next time..........

Cheers all

There's a "camera shake" icon on the 300D? You guys are putting us on, right? :?

Nice shots, Mike. Tough ones to get, too. I'd crop some (a lot) off the right of the first one.

Frank, thanks for the suggestion. Tried the crop and it works quite well.
