For a low cost, daytime soution, add a 1.4 TC. the lens will only upen up to f/4 but it's fine for daytime shots. For football under the lights, I remove the TC and live with the 70-200. I just can't justify the cost of a 300 or 400 f/2.8 for the high school sports that I shoot.

I use a 55-200mm for football (Soccer) and find it OK. No matter what lens you have you'll never cover all of the pitch. You select the side line which is best for the players that you are most interested in and shoot away. If you add a TC it would not have helped you at all on your last pisture.
