Before leaving for Ecuador I thought "Do I really need my flash?". Only used a few times but I was glad I had it on the overcast and drizzly days in the Cloud Forest around Mindo. Unfortunately in AV mode I only had 1/200sec exposure...did my best and was happy with this. The guides assured me that Flash photography was fine with daytime animals.

Took hundreds of shots but the 100-400 is not focussing right and these buggers are FAST!

nice shots...i was in costa rica in august...and couldn't get close enough to a humming bird while in the air...did manage to get a shot of one perched with it's tongue out at me...i think it was trying to tell me something

awesome. . . amazing how you got these . . they are super fast. . to catch those wings with such detail.. what was the shutter on that ? if you dont mind me asking (my S3 only ranges 15" to 1/3200 sec...)

great color in both. # 1 is very impressive

Woah, cheers guys. I had the 430 EX attached and could only use 1/200 sec (think I had safety shift enabled) this is where the 5D failed me as 3fps was not enough to capture these guys, certainly not as many keepers.

You've captured these beautifully.... Well done...

I love the first shot. I really wish I lived in an area that had hummingbirds more than just during the summer.

The flash of light is what freezes the wings. You can do it with your camera.

Neilyb,

You can actually get above 1/200 shutter speed when using your flash by turning on High Speed Sync. This is only available with external flashes, and your 430ex has it. This will enable you to use much faster shutter speeds, like 1/2000, and still use your flash. You can read up on it here.

That'll teach me not reading the manual :| Cheers for that. Thanks everyone for the comments, the first is the best of my Ecuador shots I think....but still going through.

Yeh, I wish we have hummers in Munich :| love the way the flit around.

both are fantastic, but the first it is great. It is VERY VERY hard to capture these fast elusive critters.

I tried to use my 3fps as an excuse for a MKIII, but didn't quite work out with the GF as she said a 40D is cheaper... :| Cheers.
