I was just on their site doing a little shopping and noticed this. I wonder how long the list will be by the time it is released.

Maybe we're getting hung up on semantics. I was at Keeble & Schuchatt in Palo Alto, and the salesman said they were taking pre-orders, but maybe they’re only collecting names on a waiting list. I would suppose if they’re not specifying a price yet, it really can’t be an order until a price is set and the people on that list confirm their order. I believe they were charging credit cards when they were taking pre-orders for the Mk II, so maybe this is different (i.e. non-binding).

I placed my 20D order through Adorama. Their's isn't a waiting "List", but an actual order by which a pre-auth is checked against your card, your order is in the system and it ships as product comes in; charging your card at time of shipping.

There's always an MSRP and a "street price." Why is this surprising to anyone?
I was at Keeble & Schuchatt in Palo Alto...
Those guys get all my money. Bought my D30 and 10D there, and my 100-400 and 70-200 f4. It costs more but I support the local guys.

I don't think B&H take preorders on new products, and their management has known about the 20D much longer than we have. Look how long they waited before putting anything up. All they are saying is yup, it's coming and as soon as we've got 'em you'll get 'em. And you can bet they will get a lot.
If you think about it, B&H being the biggest, don't need the shark feed frenzy some other suppliers promote, and certainly don't need the daily storms of e-mails and phone calls from frantic preorder jerks who want to be the first on their block with a 20D.

Granted, K&S has a few interesting toys at the pro shop, but why do business with them unless they offer you a worthwhile deal? I find them to be overpriced, period.

I thought Canon abandoned this practice with the introduction of the Mark II with those 2 lenses.
So..........when Canon sets the MSRP price, it should also be the "street price".

That is not an opportunity to order. B&H will notify everyone who puts their name on the list when it becomes available. It will also be available to anyone who walks into the store or sees it on the web site, first come first served.

I have called B&H and they told me over the phone they will not be taking orders for 2-Weeks as of this Monday 8/23/2004. B&H is very fast and gets larger shipments then other dealers Like Ritz who lies and takes orders on items when they have on idea on ship times. I pre-Ordered 2-10D's and got the run around and canceled my order with Ritz as I had waited 45 Days. Called B&H and with in 9-Days I had the 2-10D's in my hand. B&H is the best by far when you order equipment New or Used. Also they have a great used department.

CANON said it would be $1,500 'street', dropping the suggested MSRP (Manufacturer suggested retail Price) from their info releases.

I think B&H made up some astronimical list price for the 20D so that an uneducated consumer will look at thier site and will say "Honey look, I just saved a few hundred bucks by shopping at B&H!!!".
....................but this is just my opinion.
Or maybe the "list" price is the price of the camera in Europe

In my experience in Europe, most of the local "professional" camera stores sell at the MSRP and don't budge on the price. How they manage to sell, I don't know, but they do. They claim they give service and "professional advice" and therefore the price, MSRP. I've seen them spend hours selling some P&S dink to unbelievably ignorant people, so on that score I guess they earn it. I've also seen people exhaust the store personnel for advice and then go buy online. I buy small stuff locally, but to be fair, I don't ask them a thing.
You will usually see the MSRP published in the manufacturer's literature in support of the local brick and mortar stores. As for online houses posting the MSRP and their price, I guess it is fair because there is some reality behind it.

My CDW Rep is also keeping an eye on the 20D SKU because it's in their system but not active yet. I usually just buy everything from B&H but I'm not being picky this go around. Sooner or later, it will be mine :).
[EDIT] CDW now lists the 20D. CDW #682526

I put almost all my technology purchases across his desk so when I told him that I'd like him to watch for the Canon 20D SKU he just sent me a quote once he could place an order against it. I don't know what kind of margin he did or did not have to work with but his quote did reflect a measure of appreciation for our business. Sorry though, I can't post numbers.

I explain that I cancel my Adorama order because I ordered it somewhere else; I indicate the better deal is due to a unique arrangement. Does the cost I ordered at really matter to you enough to post about it?
[edit] My apologies for being a bit cryptic, edgy or otherwise not forthecoming with information. No excuse other than I was a bit excited to get my order in for a really good price and I posted such before thinking it through. I was bragging in a sense, and that's not polite.

Apparently there is some value to having dealt with CDW in the past. I ordered my Mk II from them, mainly because a couple forum members whose opinions I value had ordered theirs there, too. This included the person who was number one on the CDW waiting list.
First, I had to set up a commercial account, which was not a problem (being self-employed), but the price they quoted me was no better than I could have done anywhere else. I was number 15 on their waiting list, so I waited. After a while, I started hearing of Mk IIs being delivered through B&H and other sources, so I canceled the order at CDW and placed it at B&H. In the meantime, I got a PM from a forum member in Southern California telling me that there were a couple available at Samy's. I confirmed it by phone, drove over to Los Angeles, and picked it up the same day. It was weeks later before the person who was number one on the CDW waiting list got his Mk II.
He did save a few hundred dollars, though.
I'd rather have the camera.
Sketcher
27th of August 2004 (Fri), 08:33
Yup,
No telling when CDW is going to get them in. I'm just comfortable waiting. My 10D is as exciting to use now as the day I bought it so I won't be climbing the walls waiting. Now, had I not a camera; I would still be on three pre-order lists buying from whoever shipped first!
Heh, I'd probably even start a tracking thread remeniscent of the Dell 70-200 days ;). Nah, I determined never to do that again.
Though, it would be interesting to post a running list of who has a 20D on order and when they arrive. hmmmm....

B&H took my order yesterday!! I ordered 1 20D with Grip and Mack Warranty. They told me it would take around 2 to 4 weeks. So this should be an accurate assessment of delivery times. B&H is usually never wrong with canon product delivery times. Just like the D30, D60 and the 10D they were correct every time. I really like the level of professionalism and curtsey when ordering from B&H over the past 10 Years. Now were is the 20D I want to play. This time around how ever I am only getting one camera "20D" and keeping one of my 10D's as a back-up unit. The 10D is a much better camera than the D60 was over all when I up-graded to the 2-10D's at the time. So this is why I am keeping one 10D and only buying one new Camera.

Whups, had forgotten abou thread and that I was going to post my B&H notice. Ah well. Evangelos' post confirms.
DReb, most transactions where people claim that they're being charged before an item ships isn't actually a charge on the card but a pre-authorization for the amount of the purchase to ensure the funds are available. Some lenders actually limit available credit less the amount of the pre-auth to ensure that amount is available for that purchase.
DReb-MO

The web documentation claims that your card is *charged* at the time of placing the order, not at shipping time. It's one of the things I was very leary of during/with my first B&H transaction. It's not a normal practice, but this is what they claim to do. I never really noticed or checked though, because I've always received my orders from them within two to three days.
I'm not sure if they *actually* do this with an out of stock or preorder too, but, again, the web documentation does say that this is so. I believe it's during the ordering process that this small print pops up.
