I'm just filling in my warranty card - where is the lens serial number?
is it the 6 digit number printed in black on the mount?

Just got my 1st L yesterday, and would like to ask you did you buy your lens from the US or UK (warranty related).

Thanks

Got a couple of L lenses, some of the serials are at the connecting point to the camera and others can actually be on the body of the lens.

its the 17-40 F4 L
I bought it in the UK from here: http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/page54.htm

I have 2 numbers on the connecting point - one is 6 numbers, black and is stamped into the metal the other is whitish and printed on to the gelatin filter holder (I think thats what it is) this one is 6 digits and has a U letter at the beginning.

Hi Evil,

mostly they are printed on the lens mount, hard to read as its etched into the black plastic. Some are etched directly into the lens and some are on little plates attached to the lens (the 200 1.8 does this I think). You should also have a slip of paper that fits inside the original packaging and shows through a hole in the outer box, the serial should be visible through the hole in the box. Best to check the lens though to be 100%

now im confused :D
There are no holes in the box however;

On one side of the box is a sticker which refers to "lens no." This is placed above 2 barcodes "EAN/JAN code" and "UPC code".

The sticker has two numbers and a barcode. Top number ends with [AA] bottom number starts with (21).

The last 6 digits of the bottom number match the number that is stamped into the mount.

I always assumed that if you have a receipt then that is proof of purchase and therefore a vlaid guarantee - probably I am wrong

I thought that the serial number was already stamped on the warranty card but maybe that's just in the US.

I know what you mean about the card, I have always ignored them as I have proof of purchase should something go wrong.

On all of my lenses the s/n is stamped on the side of the lens, though I guess this may differ from lens to lens.

The letters/numbers combo on the mount surface is sometimes called the "mount code" and is a way of determining the lens' manufacturing date and location. For Canon EF lenses this will usually be Uxxxxx, so for example a mount code of US0411 means

U: made in Utsonomiya factory, Japan
S: made in 2004 (i.e., R=2003, Q=2002, and so on down the line)
04: month, so in this case made in April
11: some internal Canon factory code, perhaps a batch number.

When buying used Canon lenses, it can be very informative to ask the seller to provide you with the mount code. Of course it tells you nothing about the quality of the lens, but at least it can give an indication of the seller's honesty - a lens described as "two months old!" with a mount code of UGxxxx might give one cause for concern.

Well i believe it depends which lens we are talking about.

The box of my 28-135IS and the box of my 75-300IS (which has a new owner now) have/had holes in them showing the serial no. written on the guarantee card.

The box of my 100-400L does not have a hole in it. :?
It´s just as you described it above.
