Which camera would be the better choice for what type of photography and why, a used 1D 4 megapixel 1D or a new 8 megapixel 20D, if either could be gotten for $1500? I was all set to preorder a 20D but I see some 1Ds going for around the same price on eBay. I currently have a 300D and want to upgrade.

Step 1: Find out WHY do you want to upgrade:

speed (fps)?
buffer size?
ruggedness?
weather sealing?
picture resolution?
picture noise?
shutter noise?
functions?
100% viewfinder?
larger sensor?
body color?
body material (plastic, magnesium)?
flash system (ETTL1/2)
pop-up flash?
EF-S compatibility?
etc.

Step 2: When you have answered the question honestly and prioritized the reasons, the answer to your question is quite simple.

Hi Stevekwiz,

do you feel that getting a 1Ds from ebay for $1500 is to good to be true.... Sorry but you will probably find out its a scam. It's very tempting but you will get ripped off and never see your money again 99 times out of a 100. I persoanlly wouldn't touch an ebay 1Ds deal unless I could do the following

1, check that the camera works
2, check that the serial number isn't listed as stolen
3, pick the camera up myself

If you cant do the above then you are just asking to get scammed.

Now back to your earlier question, it all rather depends on what types of photography you do, give us a clue as to what you like to take and we will have a better idea of what to suggest.

All the best

Bear.. he meant the plural of the 4MP 1D... not the singular of the 11MP 1Ds...

A used 1D can be had for about $2,000.00 ... perhaps less.

LOL, My bad.

Just getting to used to people seeing 1DS's on ebay for silly money and asking if they are worth getting. Sorry Steve, I was answering the question I was "expecting" you to ask rather than the one you did.

As it is ExA1a gave a very good answer in the time that I was working out how to get my other foot in my mouth.

Hope you enjoy whatever you end up buying.

I'm currently trying to figure out what would be best for me as well.

As it stands, a wana-be sports photographer like myself, the 1D seems to be a better choice.

Nothing is final until i spend the cash (which i've yet to get) and that will be after the 20D hits the market. Ideally i can go to best buy or something and they'll let me try the 20D out.

We'll see.

The link above though may help your decision a tad.
