Or is it fairly un-natural to be wanting to go and raid the UPS terminal because I know I have a lens there with my name and address on it...
(Bear in mind it is 11:10pm here in the UK...)

Yes, it is you.
I really don't fancy raiding the UPS terminal. I'm not waiting on a lens.
;)
Cheers
Ian
(P.s. I know how you feel, I hate it when the instant gratification of a purchase is diminished by having a courier hold on to the package for days. I'm sure they do it on purpose as well.)

Raid? Hell man, I'd be launching a full out assult. The UPS guy dreads walking up my driveway. If it isn't the dog running out to be played with, it is me, ripping the parcel out of his hands.

Let me tell you my story: I ordered the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM from B&H a few weeks ago. It arrived on my birthday (9 August), BUT.....
The UPS guy had the package in his hands but told me I had to pay tax. It was only possible to pay cash, no credit card or cheque or something else. I didn't have the amount of cash in my wallet, so he couldn't give me the package.... :( I had to call the UPS center and ask them if I could pick up the package there in the evening. So I called and they said OK.
I went to the center at around 18:30. A guy went to look for the package and it took ages, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, before he returned. "Sorry, but you package wasn't kept separately, now it's locked away and we can't get to it before tomorrow". AAARRGGG!! :x
They offered to bring me the package next day to my work address.
The next day they came, but I had to work and the weather had turned bad..... :( so I had no opportunity to play with it until the next weekend...

Worse luck Jesper!
I've paid my Tax on it, they phoned me last night and I paid by credit card!
They tried to deliver today, ten minutes after I went to work... aaaaaarrrrrrggghhh!
I'm going to pick it up in about an hour from the depot... it had better not be locked away or I will not be amused!

I live in a gated community with full-time security people at the main gate. It would be so easy for them to sign for things when the residents are not home, but they absolutely refuse. They won't even accept delivery of special delivery letters. I guess they're afraid of the liablity. Every once in a while, though, FedEx or UPS will surprise me by leaving some very valuable things just sitting on the porch in full view.l They are definitely not consistent on their policy of requiring signatures whether or not the sender has required it.

Just an idea. Since you know the day it will be delivered (through tracking) why don't you call them and arrange for a time & place of delivery.

This is UPS in the UK we're talking about.
They have to try and deliver before you can even request a different address!
So tonight I gets down to the depot at about 7Pm, right in the middle of the 6-8pm they said I could collect.... they spent 15 minutes looking ofr the parcel before realising the driver was not back in yet! They called him and he would be at least another hour... but the office shuts at 8... so I have to wait. More.
tick tock tick tock
I am getting it delivered tomorrow morning, they upgraded me to saturday delivery because I went to pick it up when they said, and it wasn't there... so tomorrow morning.
With a lot of luck!

belmondo,
You live in a gated community? Especially in CA. Hooo Hoooo!! You must be in a fancy area. What did you do for a living before retirement?
If I'm being too personal, just blow me off.

That's okay, Dan. First, I'm not rich (sorry to disappoint both you and me) I was in real estate in Silicon Valley. We reitred a couple years ago for health reasons (not my own).
Don't be too impressed with the gated community thing. Most areas are gated down here, primarily because so many of the houses are vacant for a good part of the year.
It's really the rule and not the exception.

  I wish.
I seem to always have a lot to say, but that doesn't make me a writer. I often think I might have enjoyed such a career, but I came to that realization pretty late in life.

Come on. You once said that you were writing for a publication (sports related one). May not be a newspaper, but still a publication.
My memory is very bad, but not that bad.

Oh, that. Yes, I did write a column for a regional Porsche enthusiast's pubication. Actually, I've done a fair amount of writing over the years, but never professionally, and never very well.
Thanks for catching me.....I'd forgotten I even mentioned that.

My brother lives in the USA (in a small town in New Jersey), and he ordered a 70-300 DO from B&H. We went away for 4 or 5 days and they left the package on the doorstep!! My brother had informed his neighbour that he expected a package, so she took it inside.
But it is very strange that they just leave a package worth more than $1,000 on your doorstep when you're not at home! That would be absolutely impossible here. Here, they would leave a note and try to deliver the package later, or you'd have to come and pick it up yourself at the post office (or UPS center if it's not delivered by the regular post). Anyway, you'd have to identify yourself before they'd give you the package.
Suppose someone steals the package from your doorstep, then who's going to pay for the damage? I can imagine that even when it would be insured, the insurance company wouldn't be very happy that the package was left just for the taking in front of your door.

Thankyou Tom
And I must say I am very pleased with the lens so far!
I'm going to get some sample shots ready (Serious ones, not todays 'got a new lens gonna photograph everything' snapshots and maybe post a first impressions/review on it. Being the cheapest L lens I think that may be useful :)

This has happened to me as well, but only with a 200$ shipment of some wine bottles. I didn't do anything about is, although it sure bothered me a lot.
However, if it had been a $1000 lens, I don't know if I wouldn't have asked them to provide the receiped signed by me where they delivered it ... or pay the amount of the lens that was obviously stolen instead.
Best regards,
Andy

No, not at all. I'd be kicking down their door right now.
I've actually CHASED the truck before. I waited around for about half an hour for the mail truck to come by one day a couple months ago and decided that they probably aren't coming today so I went out.
On my way out...I saw the mail truck drive by in the opposite direction. Literally...almost without thinking about it, I pulled a u-turn and sped after it all the way back to my house. You should've seen the look on the driver's face. :D

Well, he was fearing that *finally* all his former misdeeds were going to be punished by an irate customer

Next time they leave $1000 worth of stuff on your doorstep, take it, sell it, then claim it wasn't delivered. It's a good way to get free lenses really.. do I have you tell you people everything??
Joking of course, but maybe it would teach them a lesson...
