... I really need a World War II carbon arc searchlight instead....
... now there's a thought....
Mike, wow, that is a weird effect. I like the photo, but I'm not too keen on the change in light (where I assume you flashed your speedlite)
Guess it's back out in the cold tonight! (and the wind, and rain...)

It is different, I would agree I dont care to much for the difference in color for your light, try putting a orange filter, tungsten on your speedlight then set your white balance to tungsten on your camera and then try it. Unless you are wanting this color of light as your image.
Keep playing practice and practice, dont get to wet. :)

hi Mike , the first thing I'd suggest is bumping up the f stop to at least 11 for night shots....as a rule heh heh. The other thing is shooting with a black sky and artificial light is always going to create effects like this where you have very blown areas. That may be desireable in some subjects, but seeing as your just beginning.....The ideal time is just after sunset, when the sky looks pretty dark but upon long exposure some blue comes back. The other time is around a full moon and allow it to shine on your subjects. Here is a link to a night photography site.
