Here is a question that I kind of have not found a suitable answer for online......

Suppose that you are a budding amateur photographer who has not gone gear crazy yet and you own three cameras.

1. Circa 1969 Hanimex Practika TL 35mm SLR with no auto anything.
2. Circa 1990 Minolta Freedom tele point and shoot 35mm.
3. Canon G1, 3megapixel digital.

And suppose that you are getting camera fever to the point that you are seriously researching the options for next equipment purchase and you come to a stumbling block....

For ABOUT the same money, you can purchase one of the following

Canon D60 Digital SLR
or
Canon 1V Film SLR

Seeing that lenses would be a wash, what should be weighed in the decision.
Here's what I see

Pro D60.
1. Photos are digitized right out of camera

2. I can see the result of what I am doing in the field (at least preview after the shot)

3. I develop (print) only the shots I want.
4. Any 'darkroom stuff' I can do in the computer and see results immediately

Con D60
1. New technology is likely to be obsolete in a few years.
2. Perceived 'slower' AF and shutter lag than a film SLR

Pro 1V
1. Perceived better results overall with film vs. digital
2. Perceived faster AF and shutter lag
3. Proven technology
4. More robust, weatherproof construction

Con 1V
1. Film, no darkroom so I have wait for processing.

2. In order to digitize, I must wait for processor or do it myself (read--added expense of scanner)

What do you folks think are the biggest considerations one should look at in this decision?

Final print size. If you plan on printing out nothing but 4 by 5's up to 8x10's go digital. If you plan on going larger than go film...

If wide angle is a concern, stick with film or go with the new contax digtital that has a 1 to 1 sensor thus no focal factor. Of course the contax is 6 grand. Ugggg.

There are probably a bunch of other points. Those are the first two that pop into mind...

That's my 2 cents...

D30?? Operationally on a par with D60. Up to 10x8 your not really going to see much difference. Your not making a living out of it so that extra quality is not essential. Same arguement for 1V, something like a EOS33 (UK name) works almost as well. won't take the abuse a pro body will but it is a quarter the price. Think lenses, all a body is is a light tight box with a shutter, well OK a mirror and some electronics. But it's the operator that makes the choices. In your position, assuming you have a computor, I would definitly choose digital, the instant results will motivate you to take more and at no cost. Hope that helps. david
