"What are you doing with these photos?"

"Whats the point?"

"Are you making money? No? So uhh, what are they for."

I finally put them in their place.

The following took place after i sent my friends girlfriend a picture of a kid we know on the football team.

Them:
do you look at these pictures or use them for something or what

Me:
i dont understand people...

Me:
A painter will spend four hours painting a picture of a tree and hang it on their wall. People look at it in awe and say "Wow, i wish i could do that"

Them:
good point

Me:
I take photos of interesting things and all people ever say is "Thats cool, what are you going to use it for?"

Them:
ok...i retract my question

It just seems that whenever people who know me see a camera in my hand, they are shocked that i would be doing it for any other reason then making money. Why is photography so taboo.

Back to the painter thing, if the average person found out that a person was drawing a picture of him/her while sitting in a park they would most likely be flattered and buy the thing. If a people see you taking thier photograph they shy away or actually get angry. I'm just not sure why this is the case.

I would say; that if they are shocked then they really don't know you. Your perception of them is then just as flawed as your indignance that they don't understand you.

Hmm, someone is looking way to deep into this.

timmyquest,

I'll admit to a penchant for pyrotechnics. Bright colors and intense heat fascinate me. But my passion for fire has nothing to do with you.

The theme of many of your posts regards your feeling misunderstood, people misunderstanding your posts, misunderstanding your intentions, and you say that you find frustration in it all. There's no deep looking, psycho-analytical magnifying glass being leveled here. I comment on your own statement because at face value it doesn't make sense.

"whenever people who know me see a camera in my hand, they are shocked..."

If people know you, then what you do is not shocking unless what you're doing is not normal.

You say that you "finally put them in their place" when they ask what you're going to use your photos for. Putting someone in their place is argumentative, not inviting so as one would like to understand who you are and what you're about. You compare yourself to a Painter. In essence, I understand what you mean to portray. In actuality, a painter creates a painting; which is usually hung on a wall. A photographer however has a less defined final product. Photographs; wall hanging, photo album, publication, paid services, website, message board, stalking portfolio, etc... Photography, especially digital is more an unknown; at least in terms of painting. Certainly, it can all be considered art. But a person asking what you are doing with your photography shouldn't be an assault to your sensibilities but an opening to conversation. Then they will 'know' you. Then it will not be shocking.

Then you will not be misunderstood.

"people who know me"

People who know who i am, and know what my name is.

People who know me, my girlfriend for example, is not included.

"put them in their place" A light amusing phrase when used in this context.

Like i said, you like throwing gas on fires...you like to start fights, this is thread number three tonight that you've done this with me. Thank you for ruining this thread.

I will never speak with you again, our problems are over before they started..moving on now.

timmyquest,

You're not quite moving on ^

Thanks for linking the threads though! I was at a loss to where that third one had gone to. Come on Tim, now that one was funny. Tom W even gave me a bread recipe! Which I'm interested in trying I might add. Seriously though, you happen to be posting in frequency tonight and I happen to be posting in recent threads. You state a definitive response in one thread and I shore up your assertion with supporting information. Unfortunately, rather than recognize the value of explaining your answer so someone else can better understand it, you take it as a personal attack.

And this thread... my goodness. Do you take everything that is not lock step with your cadence as a personal attack? Your statements are a bit contradictary in their own context. Pardon me if I offer some interest in discussing the issues you've posed. I would like to point out that you did ask for input.

Hey, back to that 'a** kissing' comment I made at your expense. You just happened to be doing the kneeling at that moment in that thread. Had it been Pekka, CDS, Belmondo or anyone else making the same statement I would have said the same thing. I'm an equal opportunity post maker so don't think so highly of yourself that you unnecessarily hit your head.

I will never speak with you again, our problems are over before they started..moving on now.
Now, now... where's the fun in that? Or rather, are we at a crossroads you and I? Are you going to ride off into the ethernet and delete your posts as you go?

Queue the "Old West" riding off into the sunset music...

Giddyup :)

Q1"What are you doing with these photos?"

Q2"Whats the point?"

Q3"Are you making money? No? So uhh, what are they for."

I finally put them in their place.

SNIPETY SNIP SNIP

If a people see you taking thier photograph they shy away or actually get angry. I'm just not sure why this is the case.

Ok lets have a crack at these

A1, Well I’m going to get them blown up and printed onto a bill board thats 60 feet by 15. Once that’s done I'm going to roll it up into a into a long tube and SHOVE IT UP YOUR #&$£.

A2, It's the sharp end of the pencil that hurts when stuck in the back of your head.

A3a, Yes
A3b, Artists are never rich in their lifetime
A3c, I wont prostitute my art for money, the act of creation is enough
A3d, They are a frozen moment in time, carefully composed, balanced and structured that will never happen again, isn't that a good enough reason to create art.
A3e, Am I wearing my "Morons please talk to me" Tshirt today?
A3f, Sorry I'm straight.
A3g, I'm sorry you seem to have me confused with someone who gives a **** what you think.
A3h, "POINT THE CAMERA AT THEM" and tell the...step back, back, back, keep going, further, keep going, now turn around and piss off
A3I, just point the camera at them, fiddle with it for a while, take it away from your eye, look at them, tilt head, ask them to lift their chin, look through the camera again, then shake your head, suck air through your teeth and put the camera down, don’t take their picture. If they ask why you didn't take their picture you say "would have been a waste of film".

YOU ARE NOT A PAINTER. Painters are without doubt in most peoples eyes artists. Photographers in most peoples eyes are just people with cameras. To be a painter you need to be artistic, to be a photographer you just need a camera. If you ask Joe public to name 5 artists, some people would struggle and 99% would not include a photographer in the list. Most people do not see photographers as artists, they are passive recorders of the natural environment. It isn't until they see a photographers work displayed and they have an emotional reaction to the work that they may view the photographer as an artist. A photograph that isn't displayed, if that be printed or via electronic means is like paint in a tube, it has potential but needs to be worked on and made available. So back to your question, a person starts to draw you, this is going to take some time. If you don’t like the idea of a "skilled artist" drawing you then you can get up and walk away or ask them to stop. However a photographer turns up, points the camera and BAM has an image of you. Because the act of creativity is so short in comparison to drawing or painting this isn’t so much a collaboration between the artist and the subject. You don’t take a painting, or take a drawing, but you do TAKE a picture.

Other things to consider
1, Soul stealer
2, paparazzi
3, people don’t like having their photograph taken because it is so honest

If you want to be viewed as more of an artist than a photographer, take more time interacting with your subject. Ask their permission, spend time posing them try different angles etc. Be seen to create rather than take a picture.

When you have a finished image, display it, let people see that you are an artist not just a person with a camera.

Best Regards

BearSummer

Perhaps Pekka could hire on some professional psychologists to resolve all of the issues we all have :!:

Have Fun,

Hey there was once a program in the /usr/games directory on unix-machines (long ago) that was called Eliza or something like that.
The program talked to you... As that's now 15 years from now, this proggy should be real good at playing Freud :P Now that would be a feature, some automatic psychological-moderator that watches the threads...

Timmy, please don't take this personally because it's not intended to offend you but I kind of have to agree wth Sketcher. You do tend to be very volatile and easily offended by even the slightest hint that, in your perception, you are being offended or attacked personally. I know this from first hand experience because you did it to me once already. And you probably haven't noticed but that's the reaon I've tried to shy away from your post after that becaues I didn't want to end up in this the same situation again.

Again, please don't take this the wrong way but maybe you should try to step back for a minute or two and reread other people's post a little more objectively without being too quick with the temper trigger. That's what maturity is all about.

Again, no offense meant by this post and I really am looking forward to the day when I can interact with you and your posts again without having to worry if whatever I say is going to be misunderstood or taken the wrong way and trigger a negative response from you.

I could quote PacAce's post verbatim. I feel the same way, and you've done it to me, too.

Timmy, please cool off a bit before posting stuff like this. Please? The last thing we need is more angry posts and/or flame wars.

As for the topic, no one's ever asked me these types of questions. In fact, I'm a little surprised that there are people who do ask.

Not happened to me much before but in the last three weeks I was 1)questioned by a security guard 2) approached by workers for a property owner and 3) asked by numerous fairgoers as to my intentions/reasons for taking pictures. #1 had fears I was a pedophile and #2 & #3 thought I worked for the paper. None could understand why I was taking pictures of things other than my familyif it was not my job!!

I just tell them its a hobby and I enjoy it - like some people like spending their time golfing or hunting or fishing or shopping. The real difference is that I can enjoy my hobby virtually anytime and anywhere at a moments notice whereas many other things require a dedicated time and place.

I've found people are more inclined to ask me to bring the camera these days. It doesn't hurt to give some images to close friends and family when you shoot at a party. I usually whip up a disk of smallish images for them. Good advertising, too!

Yeah, me too! Any questions I've been asked related to my camera or photography, in general, have been positive. Even new acquaintances have been nice and polite. Plus, they're very happy when I email them some photos I've taken from whatever event it was where we met.

Thinking about it, my camera has actually become quite a social tool.

Timmy,

You get two choices.

1. Stop posting off topic "rants of the week" that are intended to arrouse a response all together.

2. Live with the reponses your posts provoke.

One or the other.
You decide.
