Hi folks

I'm thinking about upgrading to the SLR style camera and I'm looking for help. A Few questions:

1) AM I WISE?

2) What is the cheapest 300D and lens?
This is the cheapest i've found http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=91362

3) What lenses should a beginner buy and where?
I assume a zoom and a macro.

4) What can I do with my G3 and lenses?

Cheers.

GB

1) Can't see from here, depends on your photographic needs. If you are really serious about photography and the G3 doesn't give you more than you want than an upgrade to a SLR would be good.

2) Don't now (I don't live in the UK)

3) I guess there are not really 'beginners lenses' but the lens that comes with the 300D is good for a start. Also look for the cheap (but good) EF 50mm /F1.8 II. That money is never thrown away.

4) If I where you I would keep the G3. I use my G2 (besides my 10D) for panoramas and some little videos.

Didn't answer your questions for 100% but I hope you can do something with it. :)

With the current 10D prices, might as well go with a 10D, but in any case, yes it's worth it.

Any Canon EF or third party EF mount lens will work. Good & cheap don't go hand in hand when it comes to lenses but there is one exception, 50mm Canon prime. There is no a such thing as a beginner lens, I would think it's more based on what you can afford and need.

If you can't keep the g3, sell it on Ebay, you will get lots more on Ebay then you would on any of the photography boards....

Cheers.

there have been some unhappy people with 7dayshop recently - look some pages back. Do you realise they are not on the mainland of the UK?

try here, these are a very reliable company:

I agree with Persian-Rice. Good and cheap (price cheap that is) don't go together. Decide what you want to photograph, save and buy the appropriate 'good' lens for the job whether it's a WA, Zoom or whatever.

You get what you pay for (old saying but one I believe in).

Why not 20D. If he/she decides to go the DSLR route.

Well I don't want to say that the EF 50mm f1.8 II is the top of the bill but for it's price its gives really good quality. Okay, there are always the ones with the red stripe... 8)

If you're planning to upgrade to the 300D then you might as well go for the 10D. Once the 20D hits the store shelves, I expect the 10D prices to go down. Also, there'll be lots of good deals on 2nd hand 10D's. Of course, if you can afford it then you could also consider the 20D.

I also agree the "good" and "cheap" don't generally go together. The 50 f/1.8 is a freak of nature and an exception to the rule so it doesn't count.

Or just get a steal on a Drebel when the 20D is released. Probably find them for $600-$650 on ebay in mint condition. I know I plan on taking a beating on mine... possibly to the point of keeping it as a backup.

Either way definitely go for it! You'll be extremely pleased with the image quality improvement, and that instant shutter action is worth it alone. Plus you'll be amazed at the battery life difference!

All I can say is I've tried using my G3 twice since I got my 10D. Both times I nearly threw the damn thing against a wall. Stupid shutter lag! I used to love the little camera. Oh how things have changed. :D

I don't regret buying the Drebel (300D) for a minute, but my bank account does. SLRs start you down an addictive path to buying lenses.

But by all means, hang onto your G3. I use mine a lot for family pictures and other P&S shooting where the Drebel is too much to carry.

Have Fun,

Now ... generally you should never post one thread in two boards but ...

it might be interesting to do a validity test and post the same poll in the G series forum. Results might be *a little* different. Not much, but still a bit more in favour of the G3.

Best regards,
Andy

PS: I'll also get a 20D later to accomodate my G2.

I can think of about 700 reasons

If I correctly recall, that was also one reason for you to decide for the DRebel instead of the 10D, right

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Best regards,
Andy

I'm only a beginner, so I think that the 20D would be too advanced.

Anyone know the UK launch date?

I suppose the best thing is too wait until then.

Thx.

I did the same upgrade last November. Lived on bread and water since buying lenses - BEWARE if you stick with this forum.

Keep the G3 if you can mine stays in the car and the G3 battery/card provides a backup when I'm out with the Drebel.

I'd say 10D rather than 300D, besides, if you really want to switch, my best mate is selling is 10D after upgrading to 1D MK II, pm me or email me if you are interested.

Personally as a formal 10D user, i'd suggest you get 10D rather than 300D, just so you have more control over your shooting.

7dayshop isn't really reputable according to some member's experiences here, even though they have very attractive prices compare to high street. But i would suggest you get them from the states, pay import tax/duty, it'll work out much less than UK retail price.
