This is a little different, but I thought it would be nice to see what my fellow bird shooters look like. I've seen this done on the "People" forum, but it would be nice to have an idea of who everyone is. This is one of me (with nose mashed against the camera) for all to see!!! :D:D:D Be Brave. lolol

Hey Steve--you beat me to asking who the guy in the hat was next to you...lol! There were bison on the other side of that fence, and at one point a female charged the fence and us..guess her young one got too close to us or we got too close to the fence. She didn't actually hit the fence but screeched to a halt right in front of it, huffing loudly and rolling the whites of her eyes at us. Happy to be on the other side of it! ;)

Great idea Karen, its nice to see what everyone looks like, I know I've talked to Mitch since I first joined, going by his photo, its no wonder he's good at bird whispering, he has a tutor bird whispering in his ear telling him what to say :p.Anyway, here is a couple of me, the first one I'm hoping Shirley(Booswalia) doesnt sue me for copyright as she took this photo the first time we got together for a shoot, I had just taken off the trusty tammy 100-300 and went for a landscape shot. The second was just me goofing around with a mirror shot. Keep the photos coming!!

I spent a lot of time this summer photographing The Great Northern Diver. The bird in the shot got so used to me that he didn't consider me a threat. Day by day I moved in a little bit closer and moved back if it showed any signs of stress. In the end I could go right up to it and the bird was perfectly calm. Most of the time I of course kept my distance. It’s an amazing feeling when you gain the trust of a wild animal like this.

You know, its not impossible. A number of years ago I belonged to a fly fishing board on CompuServe (it was a long time ago :D). Anyway one winter, a group of us got to talking and two guys who lived up in Grayling, MI suggested we all come up and fish the fabled AuSable River. That June was birth of what became the Trout Bum Bar-B-Q and it grew from maybe a dozen of us from around the country (several from Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Georgia, me from Pennsylvania, etc) to an annual event attracting more than 100 folks from around the country and, indeed, the world.
It was never a high ticket price event. Accommodations were spartan. Some folks camped while others stayed in inexpensive motels. One of the guys from Grayling owned the local watering hole so we ate and drank there. It was great.
So it is possible.

That sounds so absolutely cool! (it's the cheap part that caught my eye....) Would love to do something like that. Missouri, Arkansas...about the center of the country??? : To be fair, the people who actually LIVE in Missouri or Arkansas would have to drive out 300-500 miles and come back. :) Personally I'd love to get to Bosque Redondo, or one of those migration sites, and have everyone around to teach me.

Oh it had to do with a cow, dressing gown, lip stick, flight of stairs and a cops bedroom. No bovines were injured but the authorities also happened to be the cows owner so what are you going to do but take it on the lamb. :o
I'm still laughing...you should take over from Dave Barry since he retired. FUNNY! (if it's all true, ignore the last comment.....)

It's great see the face of the person behind the camera. :-)
I spent a lot of time this summer photographing The Great Northern Diver. The bird in the shot got so used to me that he didn't consider me a threat. Day by day I moved in a little bit closer and moved back if it showed any sign of stress. In the end I could go right up to it and the bird was perfectly calm. Most of the time I of course kept my distance. It’s an amazing feeling when you gain the trust of a wild animal like this.

Hi Karen, its Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm to a shark while surfing in Hawaii (where she is from). She was 13 when she lost her arm (four years ago) and she was able to return to surfing as a professional. I was able to take a lot of shots of her and it was absolutely inspirational just to watch her.

[quote=EdV;4376092]You know, its not impossible.
How terrific..I do a little fly fishing myself, but a very amateur level. I don't attempt to tie my own flies or anything. I just love fishing. Or did until I got into photography! I'd have to dust off my fly rods!

He, he...you are not the first to make that mistake and I bet you will not be the last. Sindri is a name that can be found in the old Nordic Mytholgy. Sindri was a master smith amongst the dwarfs. Many find that comic since I'm rather big. ;-)

Hi Rob
Yes, this is a Great Northern Diver (Common Loon). I have never been able to get this close to them before. I spent a lot of time in the water when I was photographing the Divers to get the low angle I wanted and on several occasions I came very close to loosing my gear. I posted a small sample of these shots in my post nr. 5000 few months back.
I would also like to see this thread as a "Sticky". It's so much fun to see the people you are interacting with on this forum. :-)

I am almost always the one behind the viewfinder, so there are precious few shots of me (which is mostly a good thing ;)). This one my wife took of me in Malawi last summer.
It was that Africa trip that re-kindled my photography bug (3000 shots in 3 weeks in Malawi, Zambia, and South Africa with a G7 - so no high-burst "spray & pray" shutter use to get that kind of photo count ;)).
Since then, my idea of wildlife has mostly shifted from game parks in Zambia to birds in my backyard - but, hey, I went from a G7 to a 40D with a 300 f/4 & 1.4x converter, so it's not all bad.
