My motherboard has an addiction. Addictions are a very very bad thing. Unless were talking about the lovely "L".

If that was the UPS delivery person who delivered your UPS, it's no wonder the computer is wearing that grin!

When my first high-end A/V receiver got fried, I learned that the cost of a UPS was relatively small compared to the cost of new gear! I now use one (or at least a high-end surge protector) on all my gear.

That's a good one. I like the way you made a story. I use a battery backup as well. I bought it beacause every time there is an accident at this main intersection near my home, my power gets knocked out. 2 x'x a year. The last time the computer didn't like it at all and I thought I had lost everything.

Just a note to those considering UPS/Protection.

Not all UPS Backup units provide surge protection. Some provide surge protection but not on all receptacles. And, just because an item states that it provides "surge protection" doesn't mean that it's adequate protection for what you have plugged into it. There are also MFGR warranty guarrantees that insure your equipment relative to the protection ability of the supressor.

Read the ratings and compare product. If unsure whether the device is adequate for your needs; give the MFGR a call and tell them what you're intending to protect.

Better safe than sorry.

First, I have to say that the UPS girl is a hottie!

That said, I do want to add that if you're living in an older house, you may not have adequate grounding of the home's electrical system. Ideally, lightning should be able to find a better path to ground than through your MB, but lightning is very powerful and somewhat unpredictable. BTW, the grounding conductor is essential for the proper function of any surge protector - if you don't have a properly wired grounded receptacle, get an electrician to install one.

For anybody who runs a computer, I recommend that you to find out what your AC power line looks like. Find out how your home AC wiring is grounded. Find out what you have for surge protection.

I'm fortunate that my power line to my home is all underground, so there is slightly less chance of lightning hitting a pole and coming all the way in to my computer.

Maybe you prefer to replace a computer motherboard after the next lightning strike, but consider that you might get a failed hard disk, or worse.
