Hello everyone! I've been a member here since 2008, and I've scrolled through hundreds of thread pages and seen countless quality photos, but never have I written a post! And so today I just thought it was about time I shared some of my own work :D So here it is! I just came back from a two hour walk with my camera around a castle close to where I live. You can see the castle far in the background in this photo. It's an 8 image HDR, taken with my 1DmkIV and the 16-35 at f/7.1. I've only done a few HDRs ever, so I'm still learning to do them, and there are a few problems with some edges here and there. Happy with the overall result though!

So, that's my first post (after only 4 years membership!), and hopefully it won't be my last! :)

I post this question here as it pertains the 16-35 mm in my case....
its about grad filters, cokin and lee are notoriously difficult to get for this wide a lens (wide enough to not end up getting vignetting), and if you can get them with the holders etc they cost a complete bomb!

my friend had a smart moment and said, perhaps if you go a step bigger (medium format) they may be more readily available and cheaper and then just use a step down ring to make it fit on this and other lenses.

i like the idea but dont know where to begin to see if this is at all possible and affordable....yes i could go to a shop and ask and try but was thinking i best ask here first to see if i would get any problems/issues at all i currently dont know of.

Thanks a lot for any input

Marco

It's a great shot, but the clouds definitely ruin things. I would try layering in one of the single shots on top of the HDR and then just mask the clouds out - using just the clouds from the single shot.

Hi Marco! I use the Lee filter system with an 82mm wide angle adapter. I bought it from Ebay for £109.00 + shipping. Sure there are way cheaper alternatives, but I like the build quality and it's probably going to last me a lifetime.
I did a quick search on Amazon and Ebay and found THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxim-adapter-49mm-82mm-Adaptor-Supplies/dp/B005Q0J6GS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1339775999&sr=1-1) for only £30. It might be worth a try! :)

Hi Thanks for the info....in the end i went with the cokin P system, as it saves me a lot of $$ and I am only a hobbyist, the cost of this with filters in HK$ is about 3/4 of the Xpro system, so I thought lets try this first, if im really getting into it I can easily say this was learning money. one limitation for this is i can shoot max 24 mm wide, any wider and i get vignetting. shoot pano's instead when necessary i suppose? not sure if there are any issues with shooting pano's with filters, alinment etc.

I'm going on a cruise in two days and was thinking of renting one of these for a week to put on my T2i as the walk-around lens. Ships have tight spaces, so I figured it would be a good choice. I have a couple questions if you have a few extra seconds:

1. How does this lens compare to the mark I version?

2. Since I'm attaching it to a crop sensor, would I be better off renting the 10-22 EF-s, or is the image quality of the 16-35 worth giving up the extra width the 10-22 would provide?

3. Is there a better option for a cruise (and stops in Mexico, Belize and Honduras)?

Thanks for your opinions and your time.

The 16-35 is a fantastic lens let me start there and don't let me talk you out of renting it but... On the crop I'm thinking that renting the Canon 17-55 might be a better choice than the 16-35. The 17-55 will give you more flexibilty as a walk around and it's plenty wide enough for what you need I'm thinking. The 10-22 is an UWA and it's very wide and it's a very nice lens, you just have to ask yourself if you really need that wide? I rented both the 17-55 and the 10-22 for my 60D last year for a Sedona / Grand Canyon trip and ended up using the 17-55 about 90% of the time...even at the Grand Canyon, and I ended up buying one. Just my thoughts, I'm interested to see what other have to say as well. Good luck and have fun on your trip.

Look into a 15-85 , perfect walkaround for crop.

I rented the 16-35 2.8 II and used it on my crop T1i and absolutely fell in love with it. I don't think on a crop body you could go wrong with this or a 17-55 for landscapes. For walking around, maybe go for the bigger zoom. My 2 cents. This shot is in Red Rock Canyon. I am now saving up for a 16-35 2.8 II.

yeah, I used to HATE the idea of the 16-35II when it came out because I was a 77 guy and it's an 82 lens. But now I use Lees pretty much exclusively so I just needed a $50 82mm UWA ring and my panels work just the same. I have a full set of GNDs, a 10 stopper and a CPL (in 4x4 format). For these I was just using the 4x4 CP, except 5 that also has a 2.5 stop GND slid in sideways!

Those are really cool pictues. Great post on the GND :)

Ben are u using the CPL to cut glare or enhance reflections or more just as a ND filter alternative?

yes!

I'm almost always shooting water of some sort, so for reflections as a big part, then partially for longer exposures but closer to sunrise, and then also for the color and contrast boost. Images look much less flat once I drop it in. At this point I just start with it in the front slot and usually even a GND before I even take my first image in the morning.

Thanks Tomcat, sadly I can't take the credit as Photomatix did all the hard work ;-)

But what a save, the originals are very dull and flat! If you've not tried bracketing and using HDR with this lens, I suggest you give it a try, I can't believe how this one turned out.

Good luck,

Rob, I use a variety of light sources ranging from flashlights, to speed lights, lanterns, and even open flame. In this case, this is a reflected and bounced flashlight.

Hey Marco, with star trails I usually blend a single exposure in for the foreground. Lighting multiple frames proves to be difficult(I've done it a few times for timelapse and it's hard as hell to get consistent light)

Yes, exactly.... I do a blend of 30+ shots and then bring the results into PS and blend in an additional frame over the top - masking out th sky and then later opacity to taste.

I'm jealous, that's gonna be a great trip... Have fun!

all natural light and single exposures. I DO use a Lee Circular Polarizer though (the 4x4 panel version) and GNDs as needed. I'm not really against HDRs but I'm terrible at processing them so I never do them.

The Spyder does have a small room in the front, so it depends on the size of your gear. Maybe saddlebags would help too.
You could take the gear to the Can-Am dealer and try, and maybe the seller have some ideas :)

Yes you are

Wind it out to 16mm and get close to the subject, you get some awesome effects! In fact I don't use my 24-105 any longer as it's not as good.

I used to have the 16-35 before I picked up my 21 and I'll tell you I miss the 16, not all the time or maybe not even that much, but when you do - it burns. I think 24 would be too much for me.

Alright I bought a 16-35mm f/2.8 L II a few months ago and I've actually used it only once for one picture .... so I'm thinking of selling it. It seems like a great piece of glass but for some reason I never pick it up. Am I crazy to think 24mm is wide enough on a FF body?

I went to NYC with my 5D2, 24-105 and a 16-35. The 25-105 was rendered useless because I couldn't get wide enough to capture the buildings because it's so compact so on the whole trip it was left in the hotel and I used the 16-35 for the duration. Like all things, I guess it depends upon the circumstances under which you use it and what you like to shoot. At first I was like yourself, but now it's reversed, I hardly ever use the 24-105 and I'm considering selling it when I sell my 5D2. It's difficult to get shallow DoF with the 24-105, but at f/2.8 on the 16-35, you can get really shallow DoF and Stunning effects. Here's a couple of mine that the 24-105 just would not allow:

Ben the several series of shots above are striking as always. COuld you share a little about your processing including how much of a saturation boost you're giving in general? thanks.

I try not to go too overboard with saturation. I have 2 presets I use, one in LR and one in PS. They each bump saturation ~10 points I think. But for a lot of my recent shots I've had to go in a reduce that number after they applied that "much" because these recent sunrises have been crazy in terms of the colors IRL. I try to match things up to reality as best I can.
