I haven't posted much for a long time, but i've lurked a little lately, and found i've been getting more enthused to go through my recent pics after seeing what others are coming up with... this one from the Dunsfold Airshow this summer I particularly like...

http://www.mikeyscott.co.uk/forums/potn/11/IMG_7863-2.jpg

The pilot was Guy Westfield, and the aerobatic show he put on was astounding, made even more so when you realise that he's not powered. More details for his show can be found here (http://www.swiftteam.airshows.org.uk/)

The photo was taken with my 20D, ISO200, 28-135IS lens at 135mm, f9, 1/640s
I've bumped up the contrast and saturation a little, with sharpening coming from resizing - "bicubic sharper", and should really clean up the image a little for the sensor marks, but wanted to post as much "out of the camera" as possible.

CC is VERY welcome :)

Cool Shot, I like that you left some free area in the image for the glider to glide into

Nice effective capture with a good "feel" to it.

PS Seeing this has prompted me to realise that the set I took of him at the same show I have not even gone through yet!!! Will have to see if any are worthy of sharing?

Hi Box Brownie... i'd love to see waht you came away with :)

I found the whole show a bit of a mixed bag (see my other threads from a while back - I think put Wings n Wheels in the titles) but here are few that I hope give a 'feel' for his display. The most amazing thing I recall was that when the tannoy was turned off (lost the feedback hum/whine) you could actually hear wind rushing over his wings he was going so fast!

These are the tug plane and glider going through their joint paces

This one is from a sequence - best of the bunch from him getting to top of a climb and doing a sort of stall tail slide before going nose down for 'power dive'

wow, really like 1 and 4... but agreed that the stall was fabulous to see.
Thanks for sharing those.

unfortunately, i'd ran out of card space by the time the glider show came on so only manged 2 shots of him... those red arrows are too photogenic ;)

Thanks, glad you liked them.

Re CF cards I think I had 5GB in total and filled just over 4GB and yes the Reds are stunning here was a thread I mentioned about others, in this case the Red Arrows http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=395178

yeah, some nice pics in there :) and the one thing that brings out patriotism in me every time is see them.

I think I like the one that you comment as being dissapointed in, as it is framed so well. Sometimes I find that composition get's lost in airshow pics due to all the action.

Yes, I know what you mean in respect of the action vs composition ~ my ref to disappointment was more to do with the passing 'action' and my attempts to get the "critical moment". But the #1 did actually work out nicely as a complete image. :)

As for the "feeling" I agree & we should be proud of what we have in them and the likes of the BoBMF which I enjoyed seeing as well ~ but again not postings yet  must get on and do the PPing.

ah yes, the crossovers were very difficult indeed, I couldn't decide which plane to pan with, and messed most of mine up. I agree, shot 1 shows the crossover nicely.
and yes the memorial flight is something else, but like you mentioned on the sound for the glider, the merlin engines amke an awesome sound too :)

That is certainly an unusual backdrop, well captured.

If you like the sounds see my post here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=379399

and this link may be better http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3956192&postcount=6

I understand the early Soitfire has the Merlin but the Hurricane has the Griffin engine.

Still improving my technique and understanding what I can get out of the camera in different conditions. All I can remember from the day was conditions weren't great and using a 300mm f4 with 1.4x TC was struggling abit, I just like it because it's different.

Well you caught me out there, I thought the hurricane had a merlin too... that's another thing learnt today :)

Yeah, I reckon we're all learning :) Did you shoot RAW? I tend to do that exclusively now, as it allows more opportunity to reclaim the highlights than a JPEG does... the original pic in this thread lost some of the highlights in the JPEG, but I managed to get them back just how I wanted in the RAW file.

I usually shoot JPeg, but have notice the significant difference with my friends images who shoot RAW. I will probably have to start shooting RAW, and get to grips with processing RAW images

A max jpg from my 20D is about 2,754 KB. The exact same shot with the jpg extracted from the 12-bit RAW "negative" is 4,315 KB which is 1.57X larger.
Whatever info is in my jpg is a lot more detailed than what comes right out of the camera. Why throw those extra bits away?
