View Full Version : Does anyone have a functional Canon?

Or am I the only one?

Since when is the box a critical element of photography?

Since when does "I just got my very first camera yesterday and I think the EF 400mm f/5.6 L is obsolete." qualify as words of wisdom?

Since when does having a scratch on a lens hood make your copy of the lens "soft"?

Since when does dust on the sensor mean a camera is "defective"?

Since when did we stop taking pictures and simply become whiners?

Good thinking, Danny.
However, you thereby also show your age.;)

No...they collect scratches, dust, crumpled boxes, and burned spots on LCDs!

I bought all my lenses (except the nifty) second-hand.

All the boxes were in pristine condition when I got them. I threw them out - I don't plan to ever sell these babies!

I've never done a focus test with a piece of paper with lines on it.

I don't care about scratches on lenses, in fact, I bought one with a mark on it deliberately because the seller knocked $50 off!

When my sensor gets a bucketload of dust on it (like huge big clumps and big hairy caterpillars) I clean it, then keep shooting.

I change my lenses on the beach! Horrors! And I cart them around with me in an old backpack with cut-off wetsuit arms and legs around them. OK, I did cave and buy a Crumpler, but it was used as well.

So I completely see where you are coming from.

For goodness sake people, just get out there and SHOOT !!!

Good heavens....someone needs to check your temperature! ;)

One of these days, just for s**ts and giggles, I'm going to get an original F-1 with a 50mm. Then, I'm going find someone with more money than photographic sense, take away their gear (numerous "L's" and other high-dollar stuff which they're clueless how to use), and tell them to shoot with the F-1!

Bbbbbbut, it's got no AF, histogram, and it uses something funny for recording images! My GAWD, where's the CF card?

No doubt I'll be rolling around on the ground LMAO!

Yeah, I know.

After hanging around this place for a while, some days I think there must be something wrong with me.

I just happen to know where there is an F1 dying for some use.

One of my favorite factoids is that the majority of service calls by appliance repairmen is the result of the appliance not being plugged in to the wall outlet, ie user error. That couldn't possibly apply to cameras though I am certain of that.

Hey! Doesn't the fact that one was smart enough to buy a DSLR in the first place automatically mean that one is an expert photographer?

Surely the former guarantees the latter!

And, of course, the proof is that you are such a great photographer that your mind excludes all else—such as the ability to communicate in English.

Maybe with a Nikonian, but never with a Canonite!

Actually, it was a thread about not plugging the camera in that started this...advice from an expert that a used camera had to be faulty if it has the previous owners name on it. And there is never a reason to plug in your camera or ever use Canon software...because I heard it from a friend of a friend of a friend's snob that Canon software is somehow inferior.

Some times you have to just shake your head and walk away.

Or, just thank them for supporting your hobby by assisting with keeping the prices down.

Offer to buy the bad equipment for a judicious cost that would fine them for being *

A parent soon learns there are some things you just cannot fix.

I'm sorry to say but this behavior will increase steadily through the holiday season.
However, most of us will still be kind to them.

Not one in particular, but some examples:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=411141 . Note posts #25 and #26, where the person who suggested they just get out and take some shots was howled down.

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=411467

I'd look for more, but I can't be bothered. These are just the two on the first page of new posts at the moment.

Yeah fantastic post.

You wouldn't believe the amount of PM's i get when i post an image in the G&N forum of a pretty girl i have just shot.

Not "how do you get such vibrant colours" or "wow that is sharp, how do i do that" - just "What lens did you use" - AS IF IT MATTERS!!!

*well i realise that it somewhat does matter, but not really. if they want to replicate my shot, having the same lens isn't going to matter squat.

I've been trying to get the advice giver to come to one of our local group meetings...to perhaps expand his horizons a bit...but he seems reluctant...oh well...

I seriously considered digging my wallet out too...I suspect if it had gone on much longer, there might just have been a fire sale!

Some haven't learned that it's better to be thought of as a fool than to open their mouth and let the world know the truth.

Dumbness has never been a function of age ...

I believe POTN is largely a spectator sport. Every now and again one has the option to lob in an 'opening line' and then sit back to watch the 'drama' unfold. All that is needed is a little 'direction' as the 'actors' play out the whole of reality there in front of us: war, death, love, glory, betrayal, stupidity, egotism, and my little pony ... be irritated or amused. It is all pointless ;-)
