Just out of curiousity, is that the lens that canon automatically sells with a tripod. I remember reading about a lens like that, and it costing like $60,000 and Sports Illustrated owning 2 of them.

The list price in Japan for the EF 1200 is 10 million yen. That's about 90,000 USD. I can't imagine Canon selling too many of those although I can imagine SI owning 2 of them.

It might be useful with a doubler :)

I heard that Nasa bought a couple of those to put in the Hubble satellite to fix their telescope problem last time. Of course, the government paid a lot more than the going rate for them.

He describes all the uses for every type of camera lens, although it's abit toungue in cheek as well :)

fisheye lens: only known use is for demonstrating the fisheye effect in photography how-to books

1200mm lens: no known uses

How about saving 25 cents by reading your neighbor's newspaper......through the window?

No problem ... just take a look at:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=154&mode lid=8178

They mention that it is fully compatible with the 1.4 and 2.0 extenders.

Best regards,
Andy

After looking at his full gallery at pbase, the guy is watching the olympics as I have been. My husband and daughter are getting sick of me saying "did you see that lens?"

Did anyone notice a picture called canoe2? I saw what I thought was a 'cheap' 70-200 L in someone's back pocket. Maybe it was a snack for these guys looking at the lenses they were using.

I don't see what the big deal is, I have "taken pictures" with larger lenses then that thing :) ***

As to the list of what certain lenses are good for. There is a purpose to the 1200mm lens

- To make other photographers drool uncontrollably, thus allowing you a special place away from the other photographers so they don't have feelings of insecurity. (as shown in "Canoe1")

*** for those that don't know me I used to be an Imagery Analyst with the USAF.

It weighs 16.5 kg. If I'm not mistaken, an lb is 453 g, so that would be about 36.5 lb.

Does anyone have any links to info that states the price for this lens or how many of them there are out there as stated above? I have a little bet going with one of my buddies....he doesn't believe that it costs more than 20G. Help me out! 8)

That page also says the 70-200 f/4L costs $1,700. I just picked one up for a LOT less than that!

Geez, then you'd have to go find a UV filter for it the size of a dinner plate!
