I find that after using the eraser on a layer to reveal image below that the image still has traces (VERY slight) of the part of the layer I tried to erase.

Wrong type brush ? or What ?

If you want to fully erase a part of the top layer, make sure that the opacity is set to 100%, otherwise you will see what you are seeing.

Yea ....

What PacAce said plus make sure that you're using a hard-edged brush and not a feathered brush. That feathered brush will leave some stuff behind in the "feather" ....

Are you seeing it throughout the layer or just in certain areas. If it's just in certain areas, it could be because you are using a feathered brush like cecilc mentioned. But even then, if you went over the whole area to be erased thoroughly, there shouldn't be any feathering left either.

Is you "flow" set to 100%, too? Flow won't make a difference unless you only go over an area in one pass.
