World at War runs on the COD4 engine, right? So would I be safe to assume that if COD4 ran smoothly on my PC that WaW should run fair?
I'm downloading the beta right now though I'm a bit surprised to see that the installer isn't even 900 megs. Hell, the Crysis demo was 3.0+ gigs. Then again, it was Crysis! Oyy...

World at War is great. I've really enjoyed playing. Make sure you guys hurry and preorder it from gamestop. If you do, you get the M1A1 Carbine on Day 1.
WHAAA?
What about us Beta players? I want the FG42 on first day. (Still remember it's power in COD1)

I think the FG42 is for collectors edition folks. Be nice if you got it for beta playing too though.
The collectors edition sounds kind of cool. $20 extra gets you the FG42, colored dog tags, double experience for a week, the game in a metal tin, and a nice little 8oz brushed aluminium flask.

I'm liking the beta. It's just too bad my 40 levels of experience don't carry over into the full game.:)
If anyone wants to play now, here's my hardcore mixed server: 69.12.63.56:28960
That server will automatically upgrade to the full version on the day that it's released so the IP will be the same. Cya there!

Well, it happened. I was in the middle of a hardcore match, when suddenly there's pixels all over my screen all jumbled up. So I shut it off, and restart. Weird hum...and then...
three....RED...FLASHING...LIGHTS.
THREE weeks wait for me. I won't even get to play World at War when it comes out...it'll be another 2 weeks for me.

Oh ****, that's right, we're talkin' 360. Sorry for some unfound reason I thought you were playing on a PC.
I've heard of that problem happening on a bunch of 360s. What's the major cause? Is it an overheating thing? Cause I've seen those units boil after awhile.
You guys should water-cool your units. ;)
Hell, add a turbocharger while you're at it, maybe even a sweet intercooler to keep it all nice.

Anyone pick up Gears of War 2? I'm holding off buying it until finals are over in about a week so I don't fail this semester :p

I never was a Gears fan much...so I didn't get #2. But I went out and bought Endwar the other day. totally different from the other Tom Clancy games. this one is not a shooter. I haven't gotten into it yet...
but since the new COD is out...i think I may put everything else down for a while and do some killing COD style.
Actually...1 more gang to eliminate for Saints Row 2...so I may finish that this week first!

Played some CoD WaW coop tonight. German (world war 2 word we are not allowed to use) Zombies coop is freaking awesome, and the coop in general is a whole crap load of fun.
PC players, throw your names up here please, the only real way to get a coop game going it seems it to have people to invite.

First play of COD 5 last night (now I've finished GOW2). Too many good games coming out too close to eachohter. Want to play them both co-op. Not as good as COD4 is my first impression but still enjoying it. Just got to the Russian sniper bit :D

I enjoyed WaW - the Co-op Zombie mode is fun, but really hard! Got to level 11 with me and a mate theother night, damn that was difficult! Gonna have to give it a go with 4 players in co op, I reckon we should be able to get a bit further!
I found the SP campaign pretty tough, no way am I going to try it on Vet, hardened took me a couple of days much to the wifes dismay!
Moppie

Is the SP campaign more involved than COD4?
And how does the co-op work? Do you have to know the people your going to play with, or do you just join a server?
(this is for PC version).

If anything the SP campaign feels more disconnected. Some decent maps, but they are really all stand alone, aside from the whole WW2 motif running through the game.
You can co-op with anyone, but a lot of games seems to be password locked for peoples friends. I did some co-op with 4 of us set up in the same room (dragged our computers to work) and it was awesome. Particularly the zombies. The coop has a lot of potential. Hopefully they'll see people playing it and release some more maps.

I'm really liking COD W@W so far but its been the buggiest game ever for me on PC. I had to revert back to older Nvidia drivers and update my DirectX to the developers version. After all that though its running smooth all maxed out at 1680x1050 with 2xAA on my Core 2Duo 2.67 GHz and 8800 GTS 640GB.

Funny, I've got the exact same video card on an Athlon system and haven't had any issues at all. I was actually thinking it was really stable. My only problem has been repeatedly getting my brains eaten on the zombie level.

sorry, been meaning to give my thoughts...
After playing it so far, I'm not impressed or excited. It's too much like COD1-3 imo. 4 still rules. I'm not saying it sucked, it's just nothing all that different. However, I do like the sniper parts. I just wish it wasn't so hand fed to you. "Dimitri, look there, come here, shoot him, etc.." Just give me the sniper and let me hunt them bastards myself... I guess that's why i prefer the Rainbows or the GRAW's over the COD's. Running and gunning isn't fun if it's all I get to do throughout the whole game. ONce I finish it, who wants to buy it? cheap...

Single player campaign wasn't as good as 4. And way too many sections where the computer takes over to usher you through some significant moment or other. I've no issue with that when used well, but this could happen several times in a level.
I still think its a good fun game though. I prefer the weapons over the COD4 versions, the multiplayer is a lot of fun, and coop is the icing on the cake. I didn't buy it for the SP campaign so the average campaign really doesn't bug me.

As far as in game play I thought they were pretty similar. (Both were very good, just wish they were longer.) The cool thing they added to world at war is a co-op campaign rather then just single player. Also I haven't even really played COD 5 online and usually find myself playing COD 4 online just because all my friends have that game so we play together. COD 5 makes a great Christmas gift.

Got COD4 for Christmas. COD2 was a lot of fun, but COD4 is really awesome. After going throught the game several times, I finally found all 30 pieces of enemy intelligence. This unlocks all the "cheats", particularly the Infinite Ammo cheat, which eliminates reloads. I really like the "cluster grenades" cheat too. Throw a few of those in the windows of a house full of enemies and they'll be all gone!

Had big issues with my ISP and latency.
Also got really pissed off with punkbuster in COD4 not doing what it should, and being fragged by little kids with mulit-perk hacks and speed boosts etc.

Consoles are not bad for FPS, once you get used to them. But they add little like partial auto aim, bullet magnetism etc, to make it easier. It's why you can't play online with a PC against X-Box or PS3 users, even though the technology exists to do so.

POS3? bleh. crap. and i don't even have an xbox360, lol. i was tempted to break down and buy an xbox360 the other day though when walmart was selling the arcade version for $200 and included a $100 coupon to spend at walmart online! used to have the old xbox, but have never been a fan of the sony POS sytsems. and then the POS3 came out selling for $600 plus (and sony was STILL losing nearly $200 per console THAT price, lol), i seriously had no interest. went for the wii system which was a much more family-friendly system. occasionally i miss games like the new "fable" or the new "ninja gaiden", but we have a ton of fun playing the wii with our kids (and metroid on the wii, the control scheme is almost as good as a pc control scheme), so it's all good. :)

LOL, yeah I love the wii too, my only complaint is that graphics are pretty choppy on a big HDTV (even w/ the component cable).
I probably wouldn't have gotten a PS3 either, but my friends got me one as a housewarming gift. It's not bad, I mostly use it as a blu-ray player now. The only game I'm waiting for is Gran Turismo 5.

I just bought Forza 3 the other day. That's actually the only reason I don't own MW2 right now (not spending $130 on games in a week). I might get it on PC though. After all, most PC games these days can be played with a 360 controller. Gaming on a couch is pretty sweet though.

I see my two year old thread is doing well....
I'm having a blast on MW2, btw. Finished the campaign, and I'm about level 30 thus far on multiplayer.
Feel free to look me up. Just mention that you're a POTN'er. WAR Reload is the name.

ya I really couldn't believe that I spent that much on video game sin 2 weeks time...
MW2 is pretty sick, solo play seems fast tho.... Online is VERY confusing at first but thats just because I don't know the maps yet haha

Well they ruined online play on the PC.
You no longer get to select from a list of servers, you just get one choosen for you.
I'm also suffering from lots of lag, yet don't have a problem playing COD4 (ping around 55ms on avg).

This was announced awhile ago, and there's a huge boycott of people buying it for PC. I don't like the amount of camping, the overly large levels, and the generic like weapons, but i think i just need to get used to it.

I'm not bothered by the weapons, camping (that was a problem in COD4 as well) or the size of the levels.
In fact it looks really cool, and apart from the lag and banana bullets I've enjoyed the couple of games I've played.
I am bothered by not being able to select local servers that I know are only 25km down the road and work really well.

Does it work with a PC the same way as XBox, in that one person's machine hosts the match? That would explain the lag. Imagine the crappy machines some people are trying to play on. You KNOW a bunch of people tried to play without upgrading. ;)

I believe it is something like that.
I know spec ops gets hosted on one of the players machines (ok for me, I've got a Q6600 with lots of RAM).
But imagine trying it on a mid range dual core laptop :lol::lol:
It also means I could be joining a game anywhere in the world, which of course caused issues with Lag. Especially if I get hooked up to a game in the US, or Europe.
COD4 has dedicated servers, which means I can choose one is local so I'm not at the mercy of all the different internet providers around the world and limited bandwidth between some countries.

I'd be really surprised if the PC version doesn't offer an option for creating a dedicated server. Listen servers are meh. Running a dedicated server and the gaming client separately but from the same machine is usually quicker.
But what'd be the point in running a dedicated server if there's no server browser? I'm sure there's a way to join a specific address, likely by console.

They disabled the console as well.
You can create private games, and host them on the creators machine, but you can only invite players from your steams friends list to play.
Great if you knoq 17 other people who all like to play at the same time, and you don't mind playing with those same 17 people all the time.

That's a pre-release comment.
I don't have a problem with the match making system, I have a problem with it matching me up with games were I have really, really, really bad latency.
If they want to impove the "consumer experiance" then why not add an advanced options screen to let us select the location of the games, or set a minimum ping etc. Then those of us with average or above levels of intelligence can compete on an even playing field.

o, i'm completely with you. i loved the dedicated servers.... being able to go out and find a server playing the type of game you want, bolts only/snipers only/pistols only/what have you...... i haven't played it yet, but i heard you can leave a game halfway thru or it counts as a loss. and while you can use steam to join up to play with buds, it's a pain because if you have a bunch of buds in and playing and another comes along, you all have to exit to go find a different server for him to join in with you. and if they don't have a hardcore mode anymore, that's really gonna suck.

The other problem with this hosting crap is balance. Someone out there is going to have zero ping as they are hosting. How can you ever have proper ranked games with that issue. One person is prefect and the rest get sucky latency.
I was really looking forward to it, but then the no dedicated server, no modded servers, no console and the $60 price tag all hit. So basically, screw 'em. I'll wait a while until I can get it on Steam for $20. Until then I'll be fighting my kids off the computer as we all want time playing Torchlight.

Yip, if you leave a game before it ends you lose all your points.
Bad luck if your get DC'd because its thrown you on a crap server, or something goes wrong with your connection (I've had this happen once already).
If you start a private game and invite some mates, you can then move around as a group between different games.
I think the options for playing mates are pretty good, possibly better and easier to use than COD4. The ablity to send invites etc is actually useful, as there are so many COD4 servers you don't always see the same ones in a list and not everyone nows what an IP address is :)
But, then all this good stuff is ruined by being thrown into a lag ridden game. It's not fun to empty a clip into someone, die, and in the kill cam you still have your head down running when they shoot you.
neilwood32
13th of November 2009 (Fri), 06:38
I never played COD in clans etc but i used to play CSS in one and it had similar problems (you were only as good as the poorest connection). The only redeeming feature in that was no kill cam so you didnt have to see how bad the lag was! You just felt it.
Unfortunately i think this is the price to pay for online play - unless we all get 50+Mb broadband with low ping (aint no chance of that here - we are still lucky to get 1/2 what our ISP's advertise. Im on 8Mb and lucky if i ever see 4Mb).

Jeez, where did PC gaming run off to in the past few years? They have to stop taking pages out of the console book.
Curious, how could you even operate a clan? No dedicated servers, no console.
Someone out there is going to hack/mod the living hell out of this game soon, and I wouldn't even feel so bad about it.
I haven't really done much online PC gaming since the days of CS 1.5 on the WON network. Does all this automation really mean better?

Last time i played (about 1 year back) i loved the ability to decide my server. There were only 2 or 3 i would actually play on because i knew the guys there and knew i wasnt going to get abuse from 12 yo with mikes (they were kicked asap).
Also been an admin on those servers and saw all the potential "tweaks" that people would make to their console to get better reg. Thats one thing i wont miss!:D

If it worked, it could be really good.
It does make it easier to just jump and play a random game.
You simply click find game, choose your game type and wait 15 seconds while it matches you up and away you go.
Pretty simple and easy for anyone to use, which I think is the point.
In theory it would open up PC gaming to a whole lot more people who don't understand, nor care about things like dedicated servers, ping and IPs.
This is assuming it works of course. I had a better night's gaming yesterday, it was more reliable, but a couple of times the host got pissed off and left a game, so it had to get reassigned, and at one point I spent about 5 minutes trying to join a game as it kept finding one, then couldn't connect, etc etc.
They simply need to add two levels of online play. The current system for less sophisticated games, and a more involved "advanced" system with dedicated servers etc.
This of course assumes that IW actually give a crap about their PC customer base.

Nope, I think they are just as bad as they were in COD4.
Heaps of videos on youtube from the low lifes making and selling them. Some of them are a very clever hacks, and often very hard to spot.
Lag is also an issue, just like it was in COD4.
Its quite common to find yourself .5 sec behind the rest of the game which just means constant death in a showdown, regardless of how many rounds you get off, or whether or not you think you fired first.
Fortuntatly it's still a very, very cool game and despite its problems, it's well worth playing.

No, it's the price we pay for not having dedicated servers and game connection service that can't measure long term ping and allow for random network disturbances.
I never had a problem on COD4, unless I joined an overseas server.
With its dedicated servers I can join one of hundreds that is locally hosted (literally only a few KM away).
MW2 on the other hand likes to connect me with people playing on other countries, often on too low a spec computer and everyone is playing with different speed connections.

And because of that the large, long term group of CoD players I play with has decided to stick with CoD WaW until (and if) there is a dedicated server released. If not, there are plenty of other games out there.
And there are so many great mods for WaW that losing them by switching to MW2 would just make it suck even more.

One of the mods we like has done a good job of porting the COD4 weapons into COD5. Pretty much turns the game into Modern Warfare in a slightly dated looking environment.
Dedicated servers were great for being able to know, to some degree, everyone on the server. Which means you know there are no aimbotting losers compensating for something by cheating. I bet they shoot Nikon too.

That was certainly the case when I was an admin on a CSS dedicated server. We knew 95%of the players so it was easy to spot hackers and any hacker was kicked within minutes.

It's interesting and but it gets old after awhile, when you're getting your score up and a nuke goes off and ends the game. Just be glad you didn't get to experience the nuke glitch in care packages, where TDM matches were ending in 2-3 minutes randomly ;)

I hear PC is having a worst time with the aimbot hacks, and most of the hack exploits such as the stat edit, was originated from there.
