If you need that broad zoom range, it is handy.
It probably isn't the sharpest lens in the world.

anyone know how this lense compares (Tamron 28-300) to the one mentioned above (canon 28mm-200mm)

I've got the 28-200 Canon lense. As mentioned before, it is not the sharpest lense in the bag (compared against the "L") but it is not bad for the money you pay. I have it on my 10D most of the time, switching to my 50mm F/1.8 for low light (F/3.5-5.6 just doesn't cut it).

You might also take a look at http://www.photozone.de/bindex2.html (SLR lens test guide) to find information before buying a special lens.
You will note that all the lenses mentioned in this thread have a long zoom range (200/28 = 7x, 300/28 = 10x) and it is very difficult to build a zoom lens with a long zoom range that delivers sharp images not just in the middle, but also on the extremes (at 28 mm and at 300 mm).
There are few quite expensive lenses like the 35-350L and the 28-300L that perform quite decent.
It all comes down to making a compromise of some sort.
Either you want to have optimum picture quality, then you have to change lenses.
Or, you prefer the long zoom range in order not to have to change lenses, then you have to sacrifice some quality. That's why these lenses are sometimes referred to as 'travel zooms', because when you're travelling, you might prefer versatility over top quality.
Mind you, what is referred to on this forum as 'not optimal quality' might be sufficient for 80% of users!!! Stopped down to f/11, these lenses might just give tack sharp photos.
Or third, if you are a press journalist and need the long range and decent quality, then you'll end up paying >2000$ for the 28-300L that weights several kilos.

boxer82003, I read from another thread that you're new to DSLR.
Perhaps this link may help for your lens purchase:

Andythaler provided an excellent advice anyway.
