Got the SX100 about 3 weeks ago.
Used in Central Park, NY and it is awesome. It's relatively small, but packs a great zoom, battery life and looks sharp.
I searched high and low, and after all my research - this camera does what I want and has the manual controls for me to use when I become more
proficient.

Bought mine a couple weeks ago and I'm very impressed with it so far. Used it on a fishing vacation trip and was very satisfied with the keeper ratio in so many various situations. The video quality is beyond my expectations too. Night shots (flash) in total darkness, macro, landscapes, partraits all came out very nice with a quick learning curve.
Battery life has not been an issue for me and won't be in the future as I now have two pairs of 2650mah nimh cells. I used the included alkalines for a couple days (didn't wear them out) and then bought some lithium cells to use for the next week and didn't drain those either and I used the camera a lot. But I have to say the most impressive feature in this camera has been the IS. It really is useful for the type of shooting I found myself doing and I didn't have to lug my DSLR and 2 or 3 lenses around with me.
I will be getting a lot of use from this camera and save some wear and tear on the 20D in the process.

I am in Beijing now, being very trigger happy.
It is about 3 to -3degC here, depending on the winds. Perhaps due to the cold, at about 340 shots, the low batt warning sign came on. I am using the Fiamo 2500mAh NiMh batteries and IS + zoom for 99% of the shots.
Flash shots seems a bit under, or was it my perception......
The LCD display is nice, sharp and bright.... colors are wonderful.
The video looks HDTV on replay (so i think). Will try to down size it to less than 100mb and up it on youtube for all to see.
Noticed the barrel distortion a bit ... but at this price (not the 17-40L's $$$$$) I am not complaining,
Afterall, I will be forgiven for the distortion as it is a "compact".
Will post my shots when I have a faster connection .
Hheheeh.

Really thinking about picking one of these up for my quicky point shoot. I like the zoom, look, features, price and dont see the real point to getting a G9 if you just need a point shoot and/or already have a DSLR.

I got this for a carry around since my Xti is too big and bulky to fit in my purse. So far I really like it. The video quality is really good for a PNS, the zoom range is awesome, the pictures clear...all of the reviews complained about slow flash recharge, but I don't find it overly slow. All PNS are slow, I've gotten used to it.
Overall, for the price this camera is great!

I've been using the PowerShot S45 for the past five years. It was my first digital camera. I just gave it to my 5 and 7 year old and chose the SX100. I really wanted the camera for its size and zoom. I know this camera can do a lot for me but I've never progressed from the Auto mode. I guess the first thing I'd like to learn is what settings to use in taking pictures of my kids from a distance in a gymasium or on a field. My son was wrestling about 15 feet away from me last night and my pictures came out terrible. I used the flash but they were dark and blurry. I know I have to increase the ISO speed but I don't know which one to choose. I was hoping for a "Settings for Dummies" lesson. I've read about the P,TV, and AV modes and that you can adjust the flash settings and aperature, but I wouldn't know the first thing to choose. I don't even have a grasp on what aperature means. I look forward to any help I can get.

This is me too! I recently got the SX100 and have taken about 150 pictures in the auto mode. Most have turned out great, but I am intrested in using some of the other features. That is why I joined this forum. I will experiment with it and ask questions as I learn more. Thanks in advance for any help. Frank

Welcome to the SX100-club, Rohngela.
To add more lights to your pictures, you can use the methods described in Page 114 & 122.
It is not a difficult camera setting, just need some reading of the manual & lots of experimenting (and deleting of bad photos) to get it right. Since you have the S45, the setting & operations isn't that much different except that there are more choices.
Thats the advanture of the school of digital photography
Happy snapping

Point & shoot cameras are not the best choice for shooting sport, and indoors is a challenge even for expensive DSLR's.
That said, you have the SX100 and want to get the best from it, so I will give you my suggestions.
The built-in flash will be very difficult to get satisfactory results from. Even if you use a fast enough shutter speed, you'll likely need to use an ISO setting that will give you noisey output.
I added an auxiliary flash (Canon HF-DC1) to my SX100 arsenal and have been very pleased with what it can accomplish.
For the best results for shooting sports indoors, I would use the auxiliary flash with the SX100 in Tv (shutter priority) mode. I can shoot at 1/500 sec. and ISO80 with the auxiliary flash set on the lowest setting and get good results (well exposed) from 15 feet away with a minimum of noise in pretty dim conditions (a gym would be better lit). With the higher settings on the auxiliary flash, I could see getting very good results up to at least 30 feet away.
If you zoom in you will have to use a higher flash setting, but it's still good.
As for "on the field" settings, I use Av on my DSLR to keep the aperture opened to the maximum setting. I have not tried shooting field sports with this camera, but would likely use either Av or Tv and make sure to keep the shutter speed at 1/500 or higher (to keep the subjects from blurring) with the aperture as wide open as possible (to gather the most light) and ISO as low as possible (to keep noise to a minimum). Using the "M" setting would give you total control of these features, but would require your constant attention to keep exposure consistent (a difficult thing to do even for experienced photographers).
Hope the helps.
Regards,
Jeff

I am in the research phase since I can't make up my mind. I was trying to find a G7 but the going rate for a used one is as high as a G9.
I already checked the SX100 and was impressed with the x10 optical lens and they way it feels in my hand, but I read that when shooting with ISO above 1000 there some noised quite noticeable.
I also was told that it does not include a charger is that correct

I don't even like to use my 20D above ISO400 if I can avoid it.
With the SX100, it is best to stay at or below ISO200 if at all possible. After that, noise can be a factor (depending on the circumstances).
As for a charger, the SX100 uses AA batteries. I don't know of any cameras that ship with a AA charger. This allows you to find your own that best suits your preferences and budget.
I use an Energizer charger that came with 4 AA cells (2500mah) and a 15 minute charger that works in a standard wall socket as well as the cigarette lighter in a car. The cost was less than $40 and I have yet to run out of power with one pair in any given day of shooting and that includes shooting some fairly long videos back to back and playing them back too.

WRT noise, and not specifically in the SX100 but with all cameras - I'd much rather get high-ISO noise than unwanted blurred images. There is noise-reduction software available; it does a pretty good job. But there's not really a viable solution for a blurred shot due to subject motion.

Well, after doing some leg work I ended up getting one.
However, even at the store I was debating if I should get the Sony T200 or the Panasonic but after checking their menu, lenses and max ISO, and the fact that I only own Canon cameras I bought the SX100 black
So now you can add me to your list. I did my first round of shots yesterday and I was impressed with the zoom capability. I shot using different modes AV TV M and kept the Auto ISO, but I read that switching to Hi ISO it minimizes noise.
The only thing so far is the ISO button tends to conflict with the Function knob control but other than that I like it. It looks like a mini SLR

I guess you refer to time delays between shots, especially when using flash light.
We faced the same problem over this delays. Perhaps it is due to the 2 x AA battery setup of this camera. SUggest that you have fresh batteries whenever possible, and especially so if you are using rechargable batteries (have fully charged batts on the start of a new day of shooting )

For those that want to speed up the time between shots when not using the flash, set the camera to continuous shooting instead of single shot. The only modes this will not work with are Auto and Stitch.

I've had mine a few weeks and find it easy to use and giving excellent results. It's not a pretty as the G-9 but has all the features and is half the price. A viewfinder sounds good but I got used to composing on the LCD with earlier small digicams. From what I've read, the G-9 viewfinder is not much to brag about.
I'll go with the SX100is anytime.

I agree about the price difference between the two bodies and unfortunately, the market has pushed the price to an indecent price for the G7 and G9.
I guess I need to either practice more or lower my expectations. I had a nice chat with Canon Tech support and he told me that basically I did the right thing with the exception of the same thing that Jeff suggested.
The viewfinder issue is not a big deal for me. I don't know why but my brain is able to switch when I am shooting with a small Dig camera vs. Dig SLR (with view finder)
1- to change the setting from single shot to continuos in order to speed up between shots.
2- try no to shoot outdoors using ISO above 400; otherwise you will get lots of noise.
3- however, indoors it's advisable to use ISO 400 and above
4- As far as the metering issue that I had he suggested that the meter read according to what it was showed on the subject, I don't agreed but I have to live with it.

Bought one a few weeks ago as a B-day present from me to me (and why not?) as a step up in zoomability from an sd700is. The original batteries (Panasonic? What were they thinking?) died the first night so I replaced them with lithiums.
Complaints - the software won't allow me to transfer MVIs into the camera, and the camera doesn't see photos transferred onto the card by a card reader. Oh well...

As with some canon in-box accessories, the batteries are meant for you to test the camera when buying it at the shop. Just like that antique 32mb SD card that comes with it....
I dunno about lithiums while i do feel that they are pricy for what they do and are not reusable....
Have fun and post your fav shots (in a new thread)

Just arrived from B&H yesterday. It's replacing(or supplementing) my Sony T9 as a portable cam. I took a few test snaps, and it seems pretty good. My only concern is how easy it is to click the back where vs turning it. I can see switching ISO or focus modes accidently, especially since this cam will get limited duty. But, I love the zoom range, and IQ seems solid.
Gotta love the 16meg SD card :)

prcrstn8, I have not had any cameras in recent memory that I know of that will see photos or movies that I loaded onto a card (I think this seems to be what you said you tried?).
I got the 16MB card too, but truth be told, the 32MB card is just as useless for anything other than to make sure the camera works when you first open the box.

BigHands, photos aren't the problem - they can be uploaded onto a new card with the camera and Canon's software. Forget the card reader.
The problem is MVIs, which the software won't touch. I've been able to upload MVIs to new cards on two different occasions in the past, each time when I bought a new camera, but I can't seem to do it now and can't remember what I did back then. So what's changed - the Canon software? I'm no technical whiz - if it wasn't possible using only the software on my computer ...
wait ... I wonder if I used iPhoto instead of ImageBrowser to transfer the MVIs?

I'm mostly curious as to why you'd need to do it?

Just a minor discovery.
According to the manual it states that on Video mode the SX100 does not have the capability to zoom. Well, guess what? They are wrong, I just came from a trip and in the back of my head I was thinking about what the Manual said, but decided to zoom and voila it worked.

Bought my wife one. We both like the light weight. compared to my g9.
She likes the ease of use.
My one question is, ive noticed the cam loves 800 iso, in almost every shot i take.
Anyone else notice this?
ione
5th of March 2008 (Wed), 17:19
Yes and you can override it to a lower ISO.
It usually goes to 400 and BTW anything above 200 you are going to get lots of noise with this camera

If you live at an apt building is not wise to use your address to receive any package period.
Unless, your building has a regular office with humans sitting in there, otherwise, sp electronics or any pckg will be gone. I think that was a wise decsion

:) I shouldn't be spending money since I finally was admitted into the study abroad program this summer (was on the waiting list forrreverrr since I signed up tooo late) and it's muchos expensive so I need to save up - but this camera would be perfect for the trip in Rio de Jainero sooo totally justified!
I' was debating taking 30D or the XT (that I might not have at that point because giving/selling to friend) - but that could get dangerous and bulky.

hi just bought this camera too only had this for only a couple weeks so very new to this camera and would like to learn more about this camera.
This is my 2nd digital camera 1st 1 was a concord 4363z 4mg camera and so far i like this new camera, I am having spme problems with trying to get a good setting for night shots but want to leave the shutter open longer if I can and even on manual mode for shutter speeds going on a long trip to jamiaca and want the shots I take to be the best compared to my older camera.
Is there a program that helps new users to use this camera(sx100is)

Rule #1 : Bring extra batteries.
A set of good rechargable batteries & charger is good investment for frequent users. You will notice that the batteries will run of juice quickly. It is because of the IS mode (sucks lots of power juice) and it's 2 battery setup (vs the 4 battery setup for other A-series )
Rule #2 : Practice makes perfect.
Snap away, delete the bad shots and post your good shots here (in a new thread please), for discussion.........
Rule # 3 : Refer to rule # 1 & #2.
On TV & M modethe max shutter time is 15 secs. Unless you are taking photos of the stars, i think it is more than sufficient.
Have fun.
Jon

Allow me to modify Rule 2 a bit.
Don't delete photos out-of-hand. Wait 'til you've gotten home and looked at them on your computer. Then study why they're bad, and what you can do better next time.

hi just wondering cause a lot of info in this manual and if Iam reading it right on a canon sx100is camera you cant put the time and date onto the picture you take on all modes and if so. how?
just a newbie with a lot better camera and any help send it on thanks in advance
Jon
7th of March 2008 (Fri), 11:42
Right - only mode that will embed the time & date on your photo is Postcard. But it's in the EXIF data for every file, which doesn't mess up the photo permanently; you can put it on the photo when you print it.

Actually, I was afraid about shooting in Postcard mode because of the date being imbedded but it prove to be the opposite.
I was traveling last month and by mistake the darn wheel changed it Postarcard mode, unbeknown to me. I got the shots and in fact, I was afraid that I would not be able to print the image larger than 4x6.
Well, while I was at the store I decided to try to have some of them printed, and wouldn't you know it, it printed a nice 8x12 and not dates, and yet according to the manual it states that it will only print 4x6 or something to that effect

I sold my G5 a year back because it was not being used a lot. I just picked up the SX100 yesterday and I have to say that this camera is AWESOME! I love that I have all the manual functions without the bulk of the G5. I've also discovered CHDK and there's so many cool things I can do with the SX100 now, like shoot RAW, battery indicator (%), live histogram, file browser. This just keeps getting better and better.
Would like to add that the Manual Focus for macro is ridiculous!
Question, the camera came with the ordinary sandisk 2gb sd. How much faster would a 4gb SDHC be?
