View Full Version : 300D image review oversight

Can anyone help. I have been using the 300D since Nov 03 and have been very happy with most of its features but I continue to be highly annoyed by the 300D's inability to toggle the INFO on the image review to off. On countless occasions, when reviewing on the LCD or on a TV this file information lessens the overall impression and masks details of the image which could be vital to a client's decision to use that image for their product. It is patricianly critical on the LCD due to its small dimensions and important to the functionality of any digital camera.
Despite searching the net and the Canon site, there does not seem to be a solution which is simply to update the firmware I would have thought. The Canon A80 has this feature so why not the 300D?

It won't turn off, or you don't know how to turn it off?
Page 42 in the manual.

It wont turn off. And page 42 would make you believe info can be toggled off but it does not. If you have access to this camera you will see what I mean. I have contacted Canon about this and they quoted the page number but after several emails they conceded it appears it cant be toggled off but I am still wondering if Canon could really have forgotten. I suspect it's an oversight but Canon dont seem interested in even updating the firmware for this camera. And that sux.
I'm just posting this topic incase someone has found a way... thanks for your help.

turn your camera on
push menu
select second tab, it's blue with a play button icon
scroll down to review
select off (after shot image will not be seen on LCD
Select on (after shot image will show on LCD with no INFO)*
Select on (info) (after shot image will show on LCD with INFO)

*When reviewing image push info button on camera to toggle info on and off.

I immediately got the camera and went through your instructions exactly as on previous occasions. It was set to ON, (not OFF, not ON (Info)). But STILL the image reviewed on the LCD shows the file number top right, aperture/shutter and images recorded on the lower left. This is what I'm referring to.
Do you have this camera because the manual suggests this is a feature but it's not so.

You can review your images without any info showing at all? The image is clear of any text on the LCD?
Then it must be a firmware bug or different version. Mine is 1.1.1 - it cant have anything to do with the camera being purchased in New Zealand...
Whether I set ON or ON (info) in menu preferences it makes no difference to image review. The info is still there.
I will contact Canon again and see if I cant get them to fix this. Thank you for your input.

That info (shutter speed, AV,etc).... I don't think it can be turned off.

You can always zoom in ;)

Yeah, I know (sigh). And it looks as though the 300D will be preceeded by a new one soon and so Canon wont bother about firmware updates.
Thanks for your interest.

when reviewing on the LCD or on a TV... could be vital to a client's decision to use that image for their product

What situation are you in where you are showcasing your work to clients by having them look at the LCD or by plugging your camera into a television?

I wonder why You would ask a client to make a decision about an image based on the LCD? The quality of the LCD is soo poor that You can't really tell if it is sharp. At most You can use it to determine if the composition looks ok and things like that but the details forget about that.

OK, I think I see the problem. You will always have 4? items of info showing on the image.
Image info>ON provides the image + Histogram WHEN YOU FIRST TAKE THE PICTURE, which gives a smaller image 'window'. If you review images afterwards, you shouldn't see the Histogram unless you press Info while the image is being display.

If thats what your seeing, then the 300D is working correctly.

jaypie77 and tommykjensenÂ*: I use this option to show clients the first images of their product/s after the photo session when there is no time to download to laptop. It is merely to gather some ideas of their preferred images and compositions as you say. Everybody has a TV. I work out of the city and I find this option extremely useful at speeding up the design process and use it frequently. Clients know the images need editing and they make their final decision on the edited versions. I dont work in a studio, but out in the field.
PhotosGuyÂ*: I follow what you're saying and this is what is happening as you describe. But it does not address the info when reviewing images sadly. Appreciate your input.

you know what always sh!ts me about my 300D?

When I take a picture I have to press play before I can zoom in. If I hit the zoom button straight after i take a picture it goes back to picture mode.
