Usualy i just delete spam, but today at work the price of adobe photoshop cs3 extended caught my eye. So i sent the email home and did some further investigating. They are offering this as a download file for about $70. My first thought was how legal is it. My second thought was if its legal can i burn a backup copy for if my computer crashes. This is very tempting but if i know it's not legal i wouldn't touch it. They claim the cost is low because there is no manual or fancy packaging, sheesh how much can a box and a book cost. Any experience with sites like these?

If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. The cost of the product is way above 70 dollars, that isn't packaging that is the cost of the software. I am willing to bet that is an illegal copy.

Well that's kinda what i thought but how can you be sure they sure make it hard to pass up. Even display all of the logos for the company they are dealing with. Wonder if you could contact the company to see if they are legit?

What will probably happen is oneo f two things:
1. You send them $70, they send you a cracked version of CS3 they just downloaded off of LimeWire for free
2. You send them $70... and they disappear.
Trust me; there is nothing legal about what they're doing. Go ahead and buy it if you want, but you will either be taken to the cleaners or buying illegal software. Not very good odds, if you ask me.

My version of Adobe CS3 Master Suite was $329 delivered. My cost on just Photoshop CS3 is $49.
You will not get those deals from spam and NONE of the spam that offers the product for that price is legit. They are either trying to sell cracked copies, bogus copies, or gov't or education copies. Even if you did get a copy, it would not be long before the dreaded adobe license agent shuts you down.

^^ That is correct.
I'm sure Adobe's interested in whoever sent you that link.

I bet if you check the small print for license you'll find that they're basically offering a back-up copy of the software.
So Yes it legal if, Very BIG IF, you currently have a valid license for the software that you're downloading.

It is illegal in the US to receive stolen property, if you knowingly purchase pirated or "illegal" software or MP3 or the like, you can (albeit probably won't) have a problem.
More importantly it wouldn't be a criminal action that would be "painful" it would be the civil action that would be.
With CS3 Adobe has gotten much "smarter" you must connect at least once after install to verify the copy (unless you have an adobe license agent on your LAN). It may fail it then, if not it will poll for updates and has a fail after X no connects built in.
One of the admins blocked the adobe agent on our network from going outbound and connecting. It was a very fast way to disable 2/3 of our copies of out adobe products.

If you REALLY want to know, check with adobe directly.
You can check their website to see if the company is a chanel partner (it is not so far as I can see) and you can e-mail tAdobe directly.
In doing some searched, that website seems to spam blogs with adverts, a SURE sign it is not legit. As well the registrant information does not conform to ICANN requirements, another red flag. Plus the BIG redflag is the fact that you got spam and the prices are OEM/GOV/EDU prices which just plain ain't allowed for general consumption.
What this REALLY might be is a phishing scam, considering the website is registered with an address in Finland, they tell you hey buy this, you enter your credit card info, and then your credit card info is sold as soon as it hits the server...sort of instant karma .
