Kinda upset, but its only 75 bucks. Camera fell 12" from a coffee table. The 50mm 1.8 II was on the camera. The lens is shot, you can tell how cheaply made it is, the whole parts that focuses broke off, the whole cylinder came out. Wouldn’t bother me as much but I am on vacation and it took some nice shots.

I’m going to order a new one but am on the fence for the 1.4, I’m only a amateur, very amateur. may just put out another 75 for a new 1.8.

I'll take pics of the broken lens and post it so y ou guys can see the insides.

what do you think? another 1.8 II or a I or a 1.4? I am only a casual photographer, make absolutely no money from it and just take pics of my family and friends

think its covered under warranty? its only 4 weeks old

Well, the 1.4 isn't that tough eaither....

Mine was 4 days old and the focus got messed up... I guessed I bumped it too hard when the focus was always out... Oh well.. Elk Grove Canon is only 40 min away from work from me... They have it right now... OTHERWISE, I totally love that lens..

To be honest, I'd probably just buy another f/1.8 unless you really feel you need the extra speed.

Sadly, if your camera falls that far I don't know that the 50mm 1.4 would be in great shape either. I am not sure how much those run....$265??

You could break a couple more 50mm 1.8 lenses for that price. However, it might be worth the investment. Here is a review that you may or may not have already come across. It gives an edge to the 1.4 and overall I personally have no doubt that it is better than the 1.8....but is it worth the extra cash.....I just don't know! :?

I think i agree, im gonna place the order tomm, so hopefully it will be in when i get home. I just have to be more careful. Thank god the camera is ok, the lens took the brunt of it.

thanks velvetjones and Kenski

Yeah, the 1.8 is good to have around, even
if you have a 1.4. It's only $70 bucks, great
backup insurance, also makes camera a
more attractive package when selling it or
passing it along at upgrade time.

I tried the 50/1.8

I didn't like it. Bad bokeh and really bad build. The way I change the lenses, the plastic mount is gonna wear out in a year or so

I have a 1.8 that is in perfect condition that i'll sell for 65 bucks shipped. I just bought the first version of the lens so I dont need this one.

if you're comfortable manual focusing...and/or have Live View, look into older, fully MANUAL glass. Some of these Pentax Asahi Super Takumar lenses can be had for around 40 bucks...adapters run from 8-20 bucks.

Way better build quality, in some cases, awesome bokeh. But like I said, not for everyone.

Good luck

I've heard (read on POTN) a lot of great things about the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. If your going to make an investment then why not do it right?

50 f1.4 and 1.8 are very much alive and kicking 2010, camera lens' lifespan can decades, so can thread's :)
I have 50 1.4 and it is a very good and usable lens, apart from being slightly soft wide open (unlike e.g. 85 1.2).

Pekka has hereby anointed that 1st time poster's thread resurection. Cool!

I "love" the Nifty simply because it rides the fine edge between brilliance and psychosis on the part of the engineers.

He was digging deep with the search feature. Many answers for noobs lie there. Wish I used it more as a noob, I do. More quickly learning would I have been.

I like my 1.4 but it is quite a difference in price. Perhaps another 1.8 and be careful not to drop it. ;)

I don't think any camera had Live View in 2004. The 40D and 1D Mark III were introduced in 2007. I don't know the Rebels right off the bat but it had to be after that as well.

my 50 1.8 fell from my bed on to the floor (carpet) which is about a foot...attached to camera and the lens snapped in two pieces.

Well, lenses aren't designed around the ability to survive being dropped on a floor.

I have the 50mm 1.8 Mark 1. It works for me and delivered SHARP photos. Too bad I want a 24-70 and selling it

Most lenses would break if they were dropped off of a table =P

I love how you can just snap a nifty fifty back together. I slapped it around in my hand. Felt solid enough. I'm sure if I actually dropped it, it would be toast from the shock....

Seems like that saying is true...

"Buy cheap, buy twice", or "Buy cheap, pay twice".

It's not so much the drop as the landing - and what kind of surface it lands on. :)

I killed mine too. I replaced it with a 30mm F1.4 Sigma. But then ended up getting another 50mm F1.8 MK1 later on off Ebay. :D

Here is what the inside looks like. Cheap tat but it's the photos that count in the end right? ;)

Canon 50mm 1.8 is a sharp lens, at least the one i have. I do take care of my lens, the not so great built quality does not border me.
