Another one of my favs. This is one cool and very loud bird. They have been showing up at the wetlands a lot lately and even have or had an active nest close to the shore.

Thanks for the kind comments. They are really cool to find. I've walked right up on them without knowing they were there while trying to shoot another bird. They are quick to let you know with their loud scream, then they haul butt out of the area. They sure like the Viera wetlands, cause it seems like theres more and more of them everytime I'm out there.

Just beautiful Don. I haven't seen any kind of Bittern at all. You Florida guys are educating me. :)

Beautiful shots! Much more 'colourful' than our bitterns - here's a photo of one flying. I just managed to get it by sheer luck. They fly VERY fast, and I doubt the AF even had time to find him! This one is at Strumpshaw, Norfolk, UK. The reedbeds have been flooded with sea water since this shot, killing a lot of fish, so the bitterns will probably not nest there next year - IF they survive.
