View Full Version : One MAJOR complaint about the Canon S5is

I have one major complaint about the Canon S5is!
I really hate the fact that you have to buy the lens adaptor in order to use filters! They should have at least included the adaptor with the camera or at least allowed threads for using filters.
This is just GREED! A way for them to make even more money!

Thought about the plus side? Since Canon didn't include one, you don't have to to use theirs and can choose others of different construction or different size to better suit your tastes.

I dont know, what would have been more greedy, to include it with the camera and marking the price up to reflect, or making it just a little easier to get the camera for those who dont want to get the adaptor or will get it months or years later?

not everyone wants a lens adapter, and some people may want a 52mm one while others want a 58mm one etc.

^I hate them personally. That's not why I got the camera, in my case the S3. I just want a smaller camera but still with zoom and manual settings.

Yes, I read one review that the reason Canon chose not to include a re-chargable Li-Ion battery or Ni-Mh batteries, as well as a AC Adapter and a lens adaptor/hood was to keep the price down. If They included all these things the price may still be well over $400-$450. Instead you can now own a fine camera for $330. I too hated this fact when I got my S3, but the more I researched, The more I appreciated that they didn't include these things. Like Jon said, I'd much rather have my tight-fitting High-Quality 58mm Lensmate than the lose-fitting poor-quality plastic Canon lens adaptor. Just my $0.02.

I didn't get one for my S3, and I'll probably never get an adapter for my S5 either. So I'm glad they didn't include it and mark up the price.

So... several of you said you don't like, want or have a lens adaptor?
What do you do when you need a polorizer? or another filter?
I hand hold my polorizer in front of the lens on tripod for now.

If you read, several people also said they preferred not being locked into Canon's adapter.

AND what kind of remark IS that ???
Anybody that does halfway serious photography work will need to use a filter at some point.

Anybody that does halfway serious photography work will need to use a filter at some point.Well, no. If you're shooting people, sports, or a number of other genres, filters aren't necessary. Polarizers are useful for scenic/landscape, but not everyone does that, or wants to lug around the extra bulk/weight of a filter adapter and filters. ND, ND grads and IR are about the only other filters really necessary in digital photography, and they're equally not a universal requirement.
I repeat - don't go confusing what you would like with what everyone needs.

I stand by what I said:
Any serious photographers WILL use some filters!

Any serious photographers WILL use some filters! And a SERIOUS photographer will use a DSLR, not an S5. The S5 is a very nice P&S, but it's still a P&S. As you, yourself, pointed out elsewhere, its high ISO performance is somewhat lacking, among other deficiencies.

WRONG!!! I can match most DSLR photo. You just have to know how to use the camera.
Why are you moderator here instead of a DSLR catorgory where you belong.

Why are you moderator here instead of a DSLR catorgory where you belong.Quite possibly because, while knowledgable about the PowerShot cameras, I'm not blind to their limitations.
If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. I prefer a full toolchest.
My A620 serves a purpose. So does my wife's SD600. So does the S3 I recommended to a colleague, and the 350D I suggested to another. And, for that matter, my Nikonos II. And the D200 and Coolpix I've helped other colleagues with. Not to mention the assorted others, live and on line, I've been able to help with their various makes, models and types of cameras.
I suggest that you might want to take a deep breath and try actually reading and digesting replies to your posts. Your shrill posturing wins you few friends and even fewer followers. Amused readers, perhaps.

I'm not here to make friends... I tell it like I see it.
If you don't like it... too bad. I will NOT be intimidated by moderator(s).
I was probably shooting photos while you were still in diapers.
It sure seems to me that this area is for non-DSLR cameras and I try to let folks know that they can take just as good a photo's as the DSLR bunch IF they know how to use the camera, such as the S5is.

You don't have to make friends here and I can see you are not in danger of doing so. But you do have to be polite per Forum rules and we will hold you to that.
BTW, Mods are here for the whole forum, not just DSLR users.

You know, I could delete your post so no one could see it but I am not going to. This is not a finger pointing contest. You were the one who said you weren't here to make friends and I was trying to assure you that you were being successful.
That's the way I see it.

If you read my first thread, I didn't say anything that was wrong.
"I have one major complaint about the Canon S5is!"
So this comment made below by Jon was needless and not exactly what I call "polite". It took off from that point. Now if you want to delete everything said After that, I'm fine with it.

telling you your opinion isn't everyone's isn't rude, it's fact. Good grief Jack, the sooner you realize that, the better.
I don't agree with you in anything but I have a right to my opinion and so do you. What we don't have a right to do is:
be rude
dictate policy
or force our opinions down other's throats.
Say what you think (within the bounds of forum rules) and let others do the same.

There are options for you it has been provided to you by Canon and third parties. I don't really see what there is to complain about.
Not everyone wants to use filters with their S5, Canon does not really market to S5 to the professional or advanced hobbyist market anyways. As such, why include something that most people would not use, seems like a waste of resources to me.
For those that do want to use them, such as yourself, there is the option of filter accessories. So the only thing you have to complain about is that YOU haven't fixed the problem, with the available options, yourself.

I guess what I'm trying to say is most camera has threads on their lenses so that you can buy filters for them. But you must buy a bulky filter adapter in order to put a filter on the S5is. Sort of defeats the compact idea.
I use the polarizer a lot in the summer.

I understand what you are trying to say. It just seems to be a limitation of your camera. I can't think of any P&S cameras that have threads for filters, just a trade off of the camera. Like I trade a bit of bulk for more capabilities with my SLR for sports and birding.

I have a fair amount of experience with fixed-lens cameras from Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, and Fuji, and I'm not sure any of them have threads on the lens barrel for filters and accessory lenses. Apparently they're all greedy.
It might also be that there are design limitations that make it imprudent to put such a feature on their P&S cameras....certainly on the ones with retractable lenses.
It's not unreasonable to ascribe the worst possible motives for design choices. We usually don't have all the information that goes into their decisions, but I seriously doubt that a profit motive was involved in whether or not to put threads on the lenses. I felt very much the same when they released the G7 without RAW capability. In my opinion, it rendered the camera unusable, and it was the first camera in the G-series I never owned. FWIW, the G9 now offers RAW, so apparently they do occasionally get the message.
One last point: I am a Senior Moderator. As such, I'm I don't get too involved in the day-to-day monitoring of the forum any more, but instead have earned the right to sit back and rest on my laurels just a little. I will say that the current crew of moderators currently overseeing the forums are an outstanding group of people, and are to a large degree the reason POTN is such a great place to get together. They do all this as volunteers, and don't even require an occasional 'Thank you,' It disturbs me to see anyone showing them anything less that complete respect. You don't have to be grateful for what they do, but by golly, you'd best show them some respect, or you'll find your welcome wearing out very quickly.
Unless and until you can prove your participation in the forum affords you the right to be critical of the moderating here, I'd suggest you take a slightly different approach in your dealing with them. We value all our members, and you're no exception. That having been said, the friendliness and generally helpful nature of POTN are our hallmarks, and your right to be unpleasant is not absolute. Please reconsider the next time you're tempted to be confrontational in your discussions with others.

I believe the term you're looking for is 'Posts'. The 38 Posted responses, along with your original Post, make this a Thread. To "read ALL of the threads" in this P&S sub-forum would be quite time consuming and irrelevant to your point. :)

I would suggest the moderator to "lock" this one.
